Sony's new RGB backlight tech smokes regular Mini LED TVs (theverge.com)

Did anyone ever put a plasma screen behind an LCD? It would've been a monstrosity, but could do true black.

It blows my mind more than a little that no previous TV had used RGB back lights.

It’s such an obvious design that I had simply assumed that that’s how they all worked!

>that no previous TV had used RGB back lights.

Actually Sony did it 20 years ago. For those old enough may remember the name Triluminos. The tech was too expensive and couldn't get it to scale. Arguably Sony has wanted it for 20 years and this year it is finally happening.

I'm really wondering what's holding up microLED displays.

Part of me wonders if the manufacturers know that microLED is the last TV anyone will buy, so they will try to never release it except at an obscene price.

I’ve installed quite a few MicroLED from different brands and had the opportunity to visit factories. All of them is the same. Production cost and quality control. MicroLED is too soon for very small pitch. Will the 0.68 for me it’s really an amazing product, the power consumption is still way off comparing to OLED and LED.

Unfortunately also the price is « justified » because of the complexity and new way to process it…Like OLED, give it a few years and it will definitely be the new wave. But at present, it’s still too expensive for most people.

Mass transfer?

"This is just a concept for now"

It is not a concept but prototype and launching soon. There will be a few other manufacture launching RGB backlight later this year.

Foldable displays, VR, AR, computers an displays at all... It's not battery hype, just tough manufacturing
