Modern weapon systems are already largely autonomous. Humans do not have the speed or cognitive bandwidth required to be effective on a modern battlefield given modern capabilities. Instead, the human operator is there to operate the "on/off" switch, do maintenance, and to watch for when things go wrong.

If you look at the design requirements for recent American weapon systems, they frequently require the entire sequence of detection, discrimination, analysis, and reaction to be completed in less than 50 milliseconds. Because a slower reaction means you won't survive. Only computers are going to be delivering those SLAs.
