Poll: Where are you from?
53 points by lucumo on March 22, 2009 | hide | past | favorite | 240 comments
This site has many entrepreneurs which is what attracted me to it in the first place. But I feel that there's an important difference between the start-ups done by many here and by me and a friend: we're doing it in Delft, The Netherlands.

So, I wondered, are all of you from the USA or is this place much more international than I think it is?

It's probably too late for this comment to get noticed by anyone, but can I suggest people register with http://www.hackrtrackr.com/ ??

San Francisco now but originally from Philadelphia.

I bet the SF Bay Area probably has the highest concentration of HN readers than any other specific part of the US.

Probably. And then near the new york area next. Good 'ol Silicon (V)alley.

I'd love to see a poll of Bay Area versus non Bay Area, although I bet it would be unsurprising.

From the Bay Area too. Specifically Fremont. Silicon Valley is amazing for tech advances huh?

Massachusetts, USA.... Anyone from New england?

Yup, in Boston.

Is there a HN meetup in Boston? If not, I'd be happy to organize one.

Boston here to

cambridge

Providence, RI

Hartford, CT

Can you put your location in your profile please? It would be great to be able to search for HN denizens by city.

Can you put your location in your profile please?

Done. Minnetonka, Minnesota here. It's interesting to see that you are in Taiwan now. That's where I learned everything I know about being entrepreneurial, which is not yet enough.

Hey, that's the closest so far. I live in southern Scott Co. Minnesota, but I work about 15 min. from Minnetonka.

That's a great idea. I've put mine in.

Here is a pie chart with the current data from the poll:

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?chs=350x170&chd=t:193...

Or if you want to see realtime data, you can use following bookmarklet to embed chart directly into this page:

Howdy neighbour.

I'm in nearby Guelph, Ontario.

I'm in London, Ont.

And I.

Austin, Texas : Live music capital of the world!

Another cool thing to check for is hackers at your school who are on hacker news: http://www.hnDir.com

Pittsburgh.

(Pittsburgh meetup next Saturday night, the 28th, at 9PM at Church Brew Works in Lawrenceville. Email me for details and to be informed of future meetups)

Pittsburgh! :) I'd email you but I already belong to the mail lists for Dorkbot, Refresh, Devhouse, etc and don't want duped emails. :)

Not much of a mailing list here... basically every two months or so myself or Ed think that we should probably have a meetup and then we email other people to figure out times that work.

Melbourne, Australia

Hey, me too!

me three

me also and am looking for a startup co-founder.

Hacking in scheme on a web- data- related prototype as outlined on quantblog.wordpress.com.

Count me in as #5.

Frequent reader, less frequent poster and #6 from Melbourne (Geelong to be exact!)

Just got back from Melbourne, (Toronto, ON), loved it and will return, and I just kept thinking 'If there was a start-up culture in Melbourne, I'd move there in 2 seconds!' - and now there are 6 responding to the thread, :)

'If there was a start-up culture in Melbourne, I'd move there in 2 seconds!'

Whilst it's not huge, it's certainly growing. Silicon Beach is a community pushing technology innovation in Melbourne (and the rest of Australia). You can read a little more about it here: http://melbourne.siliconbeachaustralia.org/about-2/ and here: http://www.rosshill.com.au/article/silicon-beach-melbourne/

Count me in as well. Good to see some people here I know on Twitter, but wasn't aware of on HN.

Melbourne / Geelong here too! I was impressed when I put the SB blog post above together too. There is a nice range of events happening, and a good amount of code happening too :)

I am surprised to see such a strong Melbournian contingent. Maybe the rain keeps you indoors, nothing to do but program? ;)

Sydney here, although going back to Tokyo for summer. (Reference for Melbourne residents: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer)

Speaking of Melbourne, how's the weather? Nevermind I'll ask again in 5 minutes when it has changed!

Perth, Australia here.

Another for Perth

Perth as well!

Brisbane, Australia.

I'm in SF, but my sister lives on the Bellarine Peninsula. I've spent about 6 weeks in Australia and love it. If anyone has info about startups hiring in Melbourne or Geelong I'd love to hear about them.

You're in SF and you want to move to Melbourne for a startup? That's the inverse of what I always hear about... ;)

I've been here doing startup type work for ages. Wouldn't mind spending some time down under.

Ditto.

Greetings from Ulverstone, Tasmania. Latitude: 41° 8' 60 S. Anyone further south? Dunedin? Hobart? Antarctica?

NYC anyone?

In case anyone here isn't already on it, there is a mailing list for HN readers in the NYC area:

http://groups.google.com/group/nyyc

Traffic is basically non-existent, but it's useful to be subscribed because we use it to organize meetups every few months.

Right here, too.

NYC seems to be an attractor to tech. Maybe it's Pecha Kucha. Or maybe a very well attended Ignite. Tech Meet-up anyone?

Or it could be Williamsburg... and the creatives it attracts.

Murray Hill area. Open to meetups and beers. Contact in profile.

Manhattan here. I love the energy. It's great for inspiration!

park slope here

also: http://hackrtrackr.com/

NYC.

Elhmhurst, Queens

Astoria, Queens

New York, NY

right here too.

Close to NYC: Long Island.

I'm from Nassau, but up near Rochester for college. If that counts as being on Long Island.

next to stony brook too, contact me - xtac@ymail.com

I clicked on USA as I am located in the Bay Area, but I am from India (had come here for BS in 2001) ... I would consider myself International, unless you meant where the most readers are physically located/residing ?

Bournemouth, England ... about 30min drive from where PG originates from > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Graham

Bangalore, India

Manish,

LOL, me to from Bangalore. Where do u live? Any luck we can meet at Barcamps or any hacker event?

Kharagpur, India :)

Mumbai, India

Cochin, India

Bangalore!

Moscow, Russia. That's why I upvoted both Europe and Asia.

Well, that's a decent number of samples - as of right now, 323 yanks, 324 non-yanks. Even taking into account timezone and foreigners-eager-to-represent-their-country selection bias, that's pretty surprising.

So according to this profoundly unscientific and unrepresentative poll, about half the world's (english speaking, community-seeking) startup talent is concentrated in the USA, and about half everywhere else. Interesting.

Copenhagen, Denmark

same here

anyone else from Copenhagen want to meet send me a mail.

:-)

People's Republic of Oregon

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Montreal (francophone) here

Me too =), In Sherbrooke for the moment

Do you think it would be better to add an entirely separate category for San Francisco and area? I suspect that while they're not as overrepresented as some may think, there may be a sizable number that could be broken from the US.

Portugal (Europe)

Portugal as well, Porto

Lisboa

New Zealand

I'm from New Zealand too. I'm in Taiwan now though.

Christchurch, NZ. How does "Oceania" differ from "Australasia", by the way?

Waiuku, New Zealand. Bonus points if you know where it is...

I'm from New Zealand as well.

Auckland, New Zealand here.

Big it up for the Kiwis.

OK, someone else from Spain? I live in Madrid, though I'm andaluz. Hola hola...

Yep! I'm from Barcelona, Spain :)

Bangalore, India

One more from bangalore. Go Bangalore. :-)

Hey buddy! Nice to see another banglorean!

One More!

Bangkok, Thailand. just moved from Burbank, CA. Kuala Lumpur is where I would like to do my start-up. It's nice meeting you.

Perak, Malaysia. Now, doing startup in US.

New Jersey (though 26 miles from the city is close enough I should have just conceded to the NYC crowd) originally.

Currently - Philadelphia. Hence the nickname.

Think I may be the only South Carolina HN member lol

Lima, Peru

great, i was working to raise money (for a little while at least) to send olpc's to some of the more rural areas in lima. i'm pervian as well(%).

what's the technology scene there like? it'd be interesting to bridge my work between here (sf) and lima. pico alto is an astounding beach.

We are pretty behind, technology wise. We don't have iPhones in vending machines, they are a little expensive here (the iPhones). Some industries use machines more than 20 years old. The only startup product used here is Facebook. But Lima isn't bad, in the more rural areas, you'd be lucky to see a car that isn't falling apart. There's probably 20 guys total with internet connection.

Finland

Oceania seems high - I presume that means Australia, NZ, Hawaii??, other pacific islands?

Scotland, UK

cool your at st andrews?

Am I the only one from Pakistan?

Tallahassee, Florida. (It's probably too much to hope that anyone on HN is near there)

St. Petersburg, FL here.

St. Petersburg, FL as well. Good to meetcha, I'd thought those html form guys were the only hackers in this Bay Area.

Sweet. I didn't know Wufoo guys are from Tampa. "Bay Area" reminds me of my trip to Silicon Valley in 2007 when everyone asked me if I was from the "bay area" and I kept saying "yes, but the other one, with hurricanes."

Arab world.

London, UK

Hey, can you send me an email? I import an herb that grows in Indonesia and if I can secure it at less than the prevailing wholesale price me and a wholesaler could make millions of dollars.

Just wait a while, you might be able to buy your, uh, "herb" right over the counter in California soon enough.

Different herb

Million-dollar profits from non-illicit herb arbitrage sounds .. unusual.

Don't suppose you feel like elucidating? Just curious.

I did two years ago here and set off an enormous flame war; while entertaining, it is completely unnecessary. I'd be happy to discuss details via email.

ah the good old days....

denpasar, Indonesia, hey dude :)

Hey, send me an email please, would love to talk briefly as I am looking for a business partner in indonesia.
