OS development can be fun. I'm writing a hobby OS myself, but currently using GRUB. GDT and interrupts are working, so I can already e.g. get keyboard input. But there's nothing like usermode programs yet. I'm 16, so what bcantrill said might be true ("there is a certain arrogance of youth here").
