A degree is also about learning the tools of the trade, so I don't find this surprising. Before a Ph.D. in Math, you need to know Calculus 1 and 2, Differential Equations 1 and 2, a few Algebras, Topology, and I'm still missing like half of the courses.

Moreover, if you try to enter a Ph.D. in Math in my university and you have a degree in other area, it's usual to require as first mandatory course the last few courses of undergraduate degree.

Anyway, I don't understand why the other universities didn't offer her a full grant to pay the tuition+.
