I noticed this a few months back. I had cancelled an Amex card and get a new one (brand new number). My old one was saved in my Amazon profile. I charged to that old account a couple times before I realized that that was the card I cancelled. But it worked fine. To this day I can still pick that card when checking out of Amazon with no issue.
