I agree with you--my experiences traveling when I have couchsurfed or volunteered have been orders of magnitude more memorable than when I stayed in a hotel. What's your plan re: ranch?? Sounds like a fun project to build.

I just left Hawaii (to move back to Austin) after 8 years.

Hawaii is beautiful, but it's never going to be hacker heaven.
