Pitting developers against one another (gamesindustry.biz)

Pitting employees against one another and framing the decision to leave (or not to burn the midnight oil unpaid) is a classic tactic to extract additional value (aka work) from the worker drones. This is done in any industry as long as there is a culture in place that enables companies to create the illusion of a job not being a pure transaction.

Elements like expected loyalty (to the firm and to colleagues) and other psycho BS are there to undermine the worker in seeing that the relationship would be quite easy if it were seen purely businesslike and transactional.

My contract for example says I am being paid for 40 hours and overtime is included. It also states that my expected time at work is 40 hours.

So I trade in 40h per week for x amount of money. Why should I work even one minute more?

I know that the argument could be that of a lottery. If I put in more effort (aka work additional hours for free) I could get promoted down the road. The carrot.

Or I could be threatened to be first in line if some day lay offs would be necessary. The stick.

I don't play that game. My side business pays enough so that I don't need to bend over for my pimp (I mean employer). I enjoy the stable and secure income. But I have no loyalty to the company.
