I’d like to think this would be an easy patch to at least let people down easy, but I don’t know much if anything at all in this context.

Why couldn’t they just release an “flick a switch off” update? And why would this be required in the first place?

Eh, I wanna say money. You gotta pay someone to get that patch working. And then tested. And testing, based on my limited experience, invariably creates unexpected issues and costs money companies are not willing to part with.
