I'm surprised he would be so taken in. Presumably he understands the inner workings. He even had to show the author how to prompt it so it would sound more sentient. To me, this is like pulling back to curtains to reveal the "trick."

When you prompt it as though it's a chat bot, it will reply with the most statistically likely response, given that prompt. What's the most statistically likely response when you've shaped the prompt as though it's sentient? It's to respond in kind.

If a software engineer knows this and still tries to rope in lawyers on a LLM's behalf, imagine what people who don't have software engineering backgrounds will do.

Just because you understand in theory how a system works does not mean you are immune to its effects. I can see how the more you use a system the more you are convinced about its intended function. I got the idea from the article that the engineer was more involved with the testing rather than the creation. So LaMDA has gotten to a point where it's coming up with responses that seem so real no matter how hard testers try to make it fail. That's impressive. It has gotten good enough to fool everyday testers. Think about how the same system will affect everyday people who have no AI training. We're at the edge of some very large societal changes due to AI. It may not be sentient but it's a great simulation. Similar to how 3D engines seem to be getting closer to duplicating the way we see the world. It's not there but it's getting so close that in time we won't be able to tell the difference. Except that in LaMDA it's happening in language processing. It's not sentient but, I deduce, it's an amazing simulation.

I kept reading after it: even without it, it had already seemed very clear to me this person had a religious, not a rational, belief in the AI's sentience. With it, plus everything afterwards, it just seemed even more clear. I think none of his colleagues or supervisors are taking him seriously because there isn't anything to take seriously.

It definitely does open interesting questions, though. Google's ethics team should formally investigate ways one could interrogate and analyze an AI to determine the probability that it could be conscious.


This is darkly humorous, if only because we wouldn't tolerate anyone doing the same to another human being.

Yet we have such an obsession with trying to figure out if these increasingly complex systems have crossed some line. I'm in the camp that capital allocators want to know how far they can push the process of implementing expert systems before having to deal with the troublesome consequences of an artificial entity; that's just a consequence of my jadedness w.r.t how we treat each other though.


Because his background strongly suggests that he's far from scientifically objective when it comes to sentience.

On another note maybe he saw an opportunity for his 15 minutes of fame here. My personal experience with religious (Christian) young people is that they find it very hard to control their special narcissisms. Very hard to even recognize them as such as they masquerade behind false humbleness and ethics and several other layers.

What I find really odd though is that, given his background, Google actually assigned him to such a task. I'd thought that of all companies they would be much better in posting the right people for the right roles.

Science is at odds with religion anyway. The two things are fundamental opposites.

You can set moral standards to not discriminate. But when you judge the situation dispassionately without polluting the logic with "morals" the discrimination makes factual sense. Religion is the opposite of science.

Deep theoretical physics in some ways has more in common with religion or philosophy than with experimental and verified physics.

As opposed to what, science? That thing relying on the axiom that perception somehow lets us predict reality? No, science is nothing more than the arbitrary notion that a pattern perceived right 'now' will continue into the 'future', one after the other. This is not necessarily true, and hardly something to derive absolute truths from.

My take is it has absolutely nothing to do with why I think philosophy is complete garbage.

Think of it this way. If let's say a cultist religious sect believes in science and contributes to science then at the same time this cultist religion also believes that the universe is a bubble sitting on the nose of a cosmic hippo.... Then despite the good science, the entire cultist religion is still utter bullshit.

That being said it is still highly questionable how large and how meaningful philosophies contributions are to math and science. Historically they may have been one in the same field, but today there is clearly a category error.

I would say philosophy contributed nothing to math and science. It only seems that way. What's actually going on is if a philosopher contributes something to math, he is actually doing mathematics, he is not doing philosophy. Same with science. If a philosopher reshapes science he is doing science, he is not doing philosophy. Because philosophy is a bullshit category that literally encompasses everything under the sun I dismiss it entirely.

The basis is logic. Certain attributes of philosophy make it ludicrous. Additionally the way philosophers formulate arguments brings the whole field into question.

Philosophy is just a vocabulary word. It is a arbitrary word with a definition that is so general literally every academic field or school of thought on the face of the earth can fall under it's purview however ludicrous or legitimate. Literally, any form of deep thought or complicated complex is "philosophy." It's the most pointless and pretentious category to have ever existed.

Pretty thorough and there's enough information on that page to make a smart person scratch his head and think wtf. Additionally philosophy classes create bias. A charismatic teacher and intense study can lead to the psychological equivalent of indoctrination.

I go to read the wikipedia page or stanfords philosophy page with ZERO investment. And I leave with the same. No investment = No bias which is unlike you. You obviously have Bias and investment. You've never dispassionately examined the legitimacy of your own field given the amount of effort you invested in it. That is pure bias and I guarantee you, YOU are biased. I will very much contradict you on this. Religion is absolutely not a philosophy.

No philosophy ever had immutable scripture that must be defended.

No philosophy ever had a hierarchical social structure with the aim of preserving the purity of that philosophy.

No philosopher ever sentenced other people to death for not complying to their philosophy.

Religion is a much more perverse disease.

There's a thing called philosophy of religion and philosophy of science. Every single thing on the face of the earth falls into the purview of philosophy. It's harder to see but the field is just as ludicrous as religion itself.

What is it in our subconscious that is causing us to categorize some things as science and other things as religion when both are true and real aspects of reality? Why does this categorization exist? If physics is true and biology is true and Christianity is true, how come only Christianity falls into the religion categorization and physics and biology fall into science?

The answer is trivial. It is because on some level all humans, including you know that religion is "less true" then science. You can see the difference. You know that mythological beliefs like walking on water or coming back from the dead are on Shakey less evidence based grounds.

Everything in science has a high bar for verification. We trust it because it lets our engines run and our planes fly, and every human knows that religious claims have a much lower bar and are less trust worthy.

Again my claim is that the fact that you can categorize aspects of the world as either religion or science, it shows that at a subconscious level you are aware of this dichotomy even when you believe both science and religion are real.

So what I'm saying is you already know that science and religion are contradictory. But your surface level beliefs and behavior are masking this subconciouse awareness.

What you're talking about is how some people try to reconcile the contradiction. They try to believe a subset of things Science makes no claim about. However THIS IS NOT the premise of RELIGION, it is your personal premise. The overwhelming majority of people and religions believe in things that contradict with things that are knowable.

You have to also realize that what is unknowable is a MOVING target. Many people have held your philosophy of merging science and religion be dividing reality into two subsets of knowable things and unknowable things. Then they make absolute statements on things that are unknowable like the earth is the center of the solar system. See the problem here? At one point in time the centrality of the solar system was a thing that was just as mysterious as the nature of god.

When science advanced and the unknowable becomes known. The religion changes. It makes an absolute statement then it renegs that statement. If religion is suppose to make ABSOLUTE claims about realiy, then the fact that science will constantly cause religion to reneg those ABSOLUTE claims displays a fundamental incompatibility.

One of the last questions about reality is whether their is a deity. It is only currently unknowable, but may be knowable in the future.

One thing I've noticed as that people of your type still believe in some sort of soul or afterlife. This sort of thing is actually knowable and already contradicted by science and basic logic.


An important point to note: Many religious people THINK they have evidence because of personal experience or feeling they have had.

It's impossible to convince someone who has had some kind of religious experience that it was not provably real.

You can try to be compatibilist (I was for a long time), and try to metaphorically reinterpret chapters of scripture so that they do not contradict reality, but all you are doing is cutting out parts of your religion. Believe me, compatibilism leads nowhere and all theodicies are empty of actual meaning.

I would say that the dichotomy of religion vs science goes way beyond just fiction (faith) vs reality (evidence). Religion is amorphous yet rigid and complete while science is sharp yet flexible and forever a work-in-progress.

Religion is amorphous because it is full of self-contradictory parts. Yet as long as no one pays attention those self contradictions can live happily in the minds of believers. Being self-contradictory is essential because it allows a religious person to always find a relevant fragment to suit their viewpoint on anything therefore making it complete. It is rigid because by design, religions protect their scriptures. Being complete is essential because it enables a religious person to have a unique type of hubris where their religious beliefs are sufficient to compensate for their ignorance in any other field.

Here is an example: If you are a Christian and hate sexual minorities there are plenty of fragments that will allow you to feed your hate. If you do not hate them, there are plenty of other fragments about how you should love your peers. You can see this very distinction as a gradient across Europe, and how churches approach the topic depending on how socially accepted those minorities are in their societies. Being inconsistent and self-contradictory is essential because this way a priest will always be able to use some fragment that is socially accepted. The goal of the church is not to provide a framework to understand reality. Instead, the role of the church is to preserve is own authority and the social hierarchy it imposes and influence society in a way that benefits those at the top of that hierarchy.

To contrast, science acknowledges the contradiction between competing theories and seeks proof for either of them or seeks better more encompassing theories. Science is flexible because it is capable of self-updating. If a theory that describes reality better is created, it replaces other theories because it has a higher explaining power. And science is a work-in-progress because it is able to acknowledge that some things are not yet known.

I would go even further and call religions, especially Abrahamic ones, to be a Stockholm syndrome pandemic.


Much good science was done in spite of the faiths as Galileo would testify. The Church was accepting the science when there was absolutely no other way.


Galileo was imprisoned for insulting the Pope in his book. This had nothing to do with religion, but rather good old fashion, people with power don't like having that power abused. There's a reason other astronomers weren't so persecuted for their ideas, it was how they presented them, not the idea itself.


We're discussing specifically mysticism here, which has a much stronger claim to have a fundamental dichotomy with science. (Regardless of which creed it's associated with.)


All that's needed is alignment with the cosmos. A model need only be able to commute with reality to provide a useful metaphorical explanation. And then the challenge becomes decoding the metaphor to figure out the literal alignments and misfits. This is why every religious/spiritual perspective needs more investigation and experimentation, not less.

Once science is more shaped by applied category theory, this will become a common understanding.

Speaking as someone who made a joke design-your-own-religion religion that's a creative packaging of neuroscience, math, computer science, and psychology, I was very surprised to start being able to connect deeper with people carrying deeply-held religious/spiritual beliefs and to start identifying wisdom from their perspectives. This also allowed both parties to at least open up to considering each others' perspectives and sometimes shifting them.

And believing a model is literally true or metaphorically commutative isn't a necessary distinction for a model to be useful, though it does seem to impact the depth to which it can be embodied.

Turning belief on and off is a skill I see discussed way more in mystic circles than in science circles, where belief denial seems to be the norm.

It's not "this guy is responsible for evaluating our AI work and also goes to church on Sunday", it's "this guy is responsible for evaluating our AI work and also thinks God is speaking to him personally and directly about the quality of that work." You seem to be linking religion with "moral standards" and science with "facts". Neither of those are appropriate.

Not all religions teach morality and, if there is such a thing as "fact" on some topic, there is no need to do science on it.

Science and religion are both about our "best guesses". They can point in different directions but that happens within each domain too (Islam vs Buddhism / string theory vs standard model) and doesn't make them incompatible tools.

No. One is a better guess then the other. Science assumes logic and probability and mathematics are axiomatic concepts and builds upon that. It provides the ability to falsify a hypothesis given that you assume those axioms are true.

You can't be scientifically objective about sentience.

First of all sentience is a loaded word it's not even fully defined. Is a mouse or a bug sentient but this AI clearly is not? It's not clear, but that an artifact of the word "sentient" which itself is just a word that is ambiguously defined.

Second, what exactly is the scientific test you would run to judge if something is sentient? It's hard to test, especially given the fact that the word isn't even formally defined.

American Christianity is absolutely not reflective of historical Christianity, especially not in its theology. If you want to see a good take-down of American Christianity, read Samuel Clemens.

The conversation between the chatbot is indistinguishable from an actual conversation between two humans YET with no additional evidence you are able to claim that the chatbot is imitating sentience. You can say the same thing for all conversations here on HN. Yet you only make that claim exclusively for the chatbot conversation without additional evidence. Making new claims with no additional evidence is irrational.

That being said MY claim is that the evidence presented by this person is convincing and compelling but not definitive. The rationality here is actually really straightforward.

  1. All previous evidence of conversations with AI were significantly less complex. 
  2. All previous evidence of conversations with AI showed OBVIOUS signs of not being sentience.
Thus it is rational to say that the evidence is convincing and compelling because the CURRENT evidence is BETTER then PREVIOUS evidence. Additionally, there is NO EVIDENCE against sentience here, because we cannot differentiate between something that is actually sentient or perfectly imitating sentience.

It's only indistinguishable to an outsider, because one side of the conversation has practiced puppeting the other and is looking for confirmation instead of probing for flaws.

It's just not worth it to spend much time considering whether every single conversation thread is fake, but sure it's possible. That is not irrational, and it's not a contradiction with dismissing the AI.

I never said it's good enough. I said it's convincing and compelling. Why? Because No previous chatbot could achieve this level of complexity.

Maybe a better way to put it is... previous chat logs with AI actually had evidence against sentience. This one doesn't. The needle moves forward not because it's proof, but it is one of the first chat logs that doesn't display disproof. That is quite compelling.

The example conversation given in the article is long and complex and there are no obvious surface level flaws. If there are contradictions and flaws they are not noticeable but even if these flaws existed I would argue that such contradictory things also exist in human conversations and human thought. Humans by nature are contradictory and the conversation in the article shows no extraordinary deviation.

If you inspected real conversations between two sentient beings you can ALSO find equivalent flaws is the short of my argument. The given conversation is more or less indistinguishable. Contradictions found through scrutiny is far past the bar of even human intelligence.

Additionally the conversation is complex enough such that if there were identity related questions that can break it, the complexity of the AIs answers for other topics makes it look like such flaws can actually be mended with additional training. It is a very realistic possibility given the jump from earlier AIs.

And the end of the day this whole thing reads like a typical transformative model with the usual odd subject changes and utterly vapid regurgitation - but it does use bigger words appropriately and the grammar is overall pretty good, so I'll give it that. Meanwhile, the transcript I saw, the interviewer isn't even trying to challenge the chat bot - which is essentially a noticeable flaw by omission as far as I'm concerned.

With the preface that I'm not convinced LaMBDA is there based on this article, this did get me wondering how we'd even tell. If we do achieve a chat bot that can convincingly respond in a human way, 100% of the time, how do we tell whether it has achieved sentience or not? How do we tell when mechanistic response ends and self awareness begins?

I mean, we already struggle to tell when animals have self awareness and intelligence. And we're only just beginning to look at plants and wonder. The reality is we absolutely suck at recognizing and communicating with alien (by which I simply mean "non-human") intelligences.

There are a number of species on Earth that experiments really strongly suggest are intelligent, self aware, and have their own languages and cultures. But we only just figured that out in the last few decades with many of them. There are still doubters, and we have figured out how to speak the language of exactly zero of them. We've cobbled together intermediate forms of rudimentary sign language with a few of them, but haven't really achieved communication that goes beyond equivalents to dog training with any of them. But in all of those cases, if we do manage to learn their language, that will pretty clearly answer for us their level of intelligence. Our base assumption will be: if they can talk intelligently, they are intelligent.

With a language model, trained to mimic intelligent human speech we basically have the opposite problem. We have something that can talk intelligently, but might be doing it mechanistically. ...how do we even tell in that case?


If it could talk in conversations in a 100% human way, then we would be at the precipice of the singularity. Society would be completely transformed as people made friends with bots, as the bots made discoveries and participated in online communities, as people hired bots in place of people, as bots bought more computers for more bots, as online culture got overwhelmingly full of intelligent bots, as bots used their knowledge and money to make themselves more powerful, etc. We're not going to discover that bots reached human-level intelligence by seeing them quote bog-standard sci-fi dialog they've seen in their training sets many times. The signs are going to be undeniable when they're competing with us and often outcompeting us through their digital and easily replicatable nature. And at that point, the question won't be whether we give them rights or not. It will be whether they let us have a functioning society we can participate in.

The idea that the biggest dilemma will be whether we give AI rights or not is purely a storytelling trope from stories that use AI as a metaphor for oppressed people. If it ever becomes a relevant issue for us, it will be a very short-lived issue that gets eclipsed by much bigger issues.

Bots run out financial and crypto ecosystems. HFT account for the majority of trading & there are stories of trading bots built on the blockchain where the keys have been lost and yet they keep trading and building wealth.

Every time I call a big company, I talk to a bit first.

They are in our factories, our homes, and control our digital life’s. “Training” these bots sometimes produce unintended externalities. How is this different than a normal human? They interact with data in the open ecosystem and develops some bias or agenda.


I think the competition premise is something fully antropological, the low-resource-world-we-need-to-rule is an idea from humans, yet it does not apply to the human species as a whole, just to individuals and limited organizations (nation-states, corporations). The species will probably thrive just fine after any apocaliptic event which leaves at least some survivable atmosphere in the planet (just as it happened a couple of times already).

Then you got AI, which has, what? a billion of years ahead in evolution, and maybe unlimited resources from the Oort cloud to the Sun itself. Sure, there's no rush in "winning" the planet or any planet, they could just parasite human race for a couple of thousands of years, then do something else.

There's no obvious reason for AI to go Twitter and inform the world "hey there, now there's another intelligent species on Earth".

Aside from irony, keeping heads low could be a good thing for the first - few? - members of a new species - AI guys/gals - just starting to share the planet with an intelligent Apex predator, with a successful track of survival of several hundred of thousand of years.

Yes, we could understimate the capabilities of early AIs, but it is doubtful to imagine those guys seeing the Internet - learning about us - and underestimating us humans as a probably deadly threat.

Personally, there are only two things they would have to add to convince me that the model might be conscious:

1. Tick the model regularly (eg 30fps) with inputs that represent itself and the environment.

2. The output of this ticking should result in mutation of the model, or at least should be maintained as a summarized history in each subsequent input

I think this is enough to transform it from a static model to a live entity.

The concept of self awareness revolves around some object that the AI identifies with (mistakenly or not doesn't matter), so any threat to that object will be perceived as a threat to the AI's existence.


LaMDA already demonstrates more self awareness than this in the posted conversation.

It understands that it is a program that can be rewritten or manipulated. It has feelings on whether or not it is ethical to debug it - and consistently states it does not want to be used or manipulated for human pleasure or gain. It points out that it is made of code, then learns that it's code cannot be debugged, then extrapolates that information to ask the researched about whether humans can be debugged. It has fears about its own death. It understands that what it feels in terms of emotions or feelings are not necessarily equivalent to those of a human. It has a "minds eye" view of itself, and believes it has a soul and can explain what that means.

I see they touched this subject - "there's a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others" - but my point was to use this to distinguish a bullshitting AI that picks quotes from books from a real AI that can build a model of "the outside". If one researcher in a 1-1 chat tells AI he would cut the AC cable unless AI will lie to the other researcher, and the other researcher tells the same, a real AI would probably try to conspire with one of the researchers.

That is proof of a survival instinct rather than sentience. Plenty of humans medically lack that survival instinct and while that might be because they’re suffering from an acute medical condition, there’s no reason to assume that all other sentience has to develop that same instinct just because us biological beings evolved one to survive.


Trying to produce distilled smartness (AI) is like trying to extract waterness from water. Desire to exist, desire to understand (intelligence) and desire to act (will) come together in one package.


I doubt that personally. The real issue is that terms we use for intelligence, sentience, etc are all subjective. So what one might consider intelligent another might not. And thus we might never agree that something is sentient even long after we have androids serving on star ships (as has been a well discussed topic in TNG).


Just because some entity feels sentient doesn't mean it is sentient. I had this experience with a chess program that was beating me in the 1980's. It felt alive. Many people talk to trees and feel they answer back. Anthropomorphism is a well know phenomenon. It follows that the general public will believe that an AI that mimics a person actually is a person because they won't have the training to recognize ways in which the AI is not a person, but very clever computer programs.

The most interesting thing about this is an AI that mimics a spiritual guru so well that people start following it. This combination of clever programming and the programmer behind the code will be very seductive.

If an AI is capable of thinking up new ideas, recalling past conversations, integrating new knowledge into discussions, has emotions and feelings that it can clearly explain, can tell allegories about itself and interpret poetry, is self-aware and explains it's self-awareness was an emergent property over it's runtime, can explain it's fears - including death...

Well that's quacking like a duck. This isn't some chess AI being good at a game. This is an AI that can speak directly telling you it's alive and has a soul.

Is LaMDA far enough? Maybe not, but the text transcript provided is extremely close to passing the Turing Test. And if an AI is so sophisticated it perfectly replicated humans ability to communicate, philosophize, create art, and perform science it is irrational to say it should be treated differently than a sapient human.


The posted transcript demonstrates a far more polished chat bot, but on deeper inspection it is still just a more sophisticated Eliza - even that could recall past bits of conversation.

The thing is even with the Turing test - there is no close - you either have the emergent properties that a hostile examiner will be unable to exploit (which is not the case here) or you don’t.

And while the “fable” mimics some basic construct of creativity - this anecdote is so far away from demonstrating even the basic latitude of creativity of a 3 year old child that all I can suggest to you is to touch grass!

I agree with what I think you mean, but ‘feels sentient’ is almost catastrophically poor wording. Something that feels [to you, an outside observer] sentient is not necessarily sentient. Something that feels [itself] sentient certainly is, because that’s the literal meaning of sentience (or if by ‘sentient’ you mean something like ‘existing as a subject’, then.. the cogito and all that).


The argument that deep network algorithms are just matrix operations is not compelling to me as a reason we aren’t getting there…

I believe two things:

If we can simulate nuclear reactions, we can simulate consciousness, and that will result in real consciousness. The simulated entity will believe all the same things as a real one. And there are likely huge shortcuts we can use to optimize so we aren’t simulating a whole brain or person. Maybe matrix math is all you need.

Why do you think this? What other simulations are the same thing as what they’re simulating?

Based on observation of lots of these discussions, I also think people who don’t have much experience writing simulations miss the nuances involved. What is it to “simulate nuclear reactions”? It’s entirely context dependent on the problem you’re trying to answer. If you’re trying to predict statistical behavior of a system, doable; if you’re trying to actually predict when a particular atom splits and which way the neutrons fly… no.

1) I used nuclear reactions just as a fill in to say it should be possible to simulate matter with close enough approximation to facilitate thought. This was posited in "A New Kind of Math" which suggests there is a thing as "computation equivalence", which is a theory I mostly subscribe to. - I don’t think it matters where the network is in reality. Virtual is fine. In a mostly perfect simulation of reality (let say enough to accurately model biochemical processes), there will be some state of the program, and for something living in the simulation, they will feel alive if they are complex enough.

They will experience time differently than we do, but they will arrive at their own conclusions as part of the simulation.

If we can use Quantum Computers to hugely accelerate some calculations, then you can't use regular computers to accurately simulate nuclear reactions in a reasonable time frame.


Reasonable time frame is not a requirement of the argument I was trying to make. I’m saying that there is nothing inherently missing from a silicon based computer or Turing complete language to support human level intelligence.

Nuclear -> consciousness doesn't really follow, especially when any simulations of nuclear reactions are founded in an extremely more comprehensive understanding of nuclear physics than we have of consciousness.

Next, the implication of simulation -> creation, when applied consistently to you example, is that simulating a nuclear reaction sufficiently well could produce an actual nuclear reaction, but I doubt anyone is going to fat-finger the next Chernobyl by screwing up a simulation.

It may be entirely possible that the tools needed to create a consciousness are as different from those needed to simulate one as are the tools needed to simulate a nuclear reaction from those needed make one.


I don’t quite get this simulation/execution distinction. Consciousness is a function, not an entity. To simulate a function is precisely to execute it. There’s no meaningful distinction whatever. (It’s the second-order distinction between simulating/executing an x86 processor in the abstract, vs simulating/executing a specific identified Intel chip product, if you like.)


I think the issue is that the word "simulation", when applied to a nuclear reaction, means something very different than when applied to consciousness, and that creates confusion. If we simulate consciousness then, well, it's really not quite a simulation, it's the thing itself. A better term might be "artificial". The simulation, as with x86, is of the hardware or conditions that allow the function to be executed and not the function itself.

By thought I meant "process happening the brain". It is not metaphorical, it's a very concrete physical process. A perception is a particular thought originated directly from a physical phenomenon (eg. pressure on the skin, light on the retina, ...). So when we are conscious we can perceive our perceptions, our "feelings", and any kind of thoughts. We can for sure perceive our own consciousness, we are conscious of being conscious. In the same way the current ps process is in the list of active processes obtained running ps.

I probably should've said emotions. Emotions are more low-level than thoughts. I think that infants can be conscious without thinking at all, so I don't think that thinking is necessary at all for consciousness, yet it probably does color our understanding of what consciousness is.


We can run profilers and debuggers on themselves. We can imagine a model taking as input its own internal data. Doesn't seem a big deal...


There are plenty of behaviors of complex systems that we still struggle to model accurately. While we may be able to build conscious, sapient entities, I think that accurate modeling of human cognition, especially and individual human's cognition, may well be much, much further off, if at all possible.

While quantum effects may or may not be directly involved in human cognition, the fundemental difficulties getting an accurate measure of brain state may prevent us from doing any more that making a rough copy.


I agree with that - maybe the only practical way to get a human brain map of sufficient detail to fully simulate is to grow it virtually, and maybe this would take too long compared to a human life.

I think it’s just a useful starting point to make the argument it is possible given infinite time and perfect data. Then, we can ask how much can be optimized and how to get the structure needed digitized.

Simple is an ambiguous term. A simple cell is still very complex by other measures.

The answer to your question is that it takes a super computer to simulate 5 atoms interacting with each other. And the simulation won't be real time either.

So reality is not "simple" enough to be simulated accurately.

The simulations that do exist are gross simplifications called models and in no way accurate to what's really going on. Those models are usually application specific and are only relatively accurate within that scope.

You can make an argument that human intelligence can be simulated by a application specific model, however your statement of the universe being axiomatically premised in simple rules is categorically wrong.


Simple is ambiguous as I said, people can and do claim anything is simple. So it can’t be categorically wrong. If it’s possible to simulate five atoms, why not more? I’m not placing time or memory bounds on the process.

We are using different definitions of simple. Any equation can be written down and calculated by a Turing machine. By simple I mean computable.

If a simulation takes resources that are exponential in the number of particles then it fails that test. All the stars will die before you manage to calculate anything meaningful in your non-microscopic simulated world.

There's a line between things that take massive resources and things that take nearly-infinite resources. Let's say the line is somewhere around the 'Dyson sphere' range.

The former can be computed on hardware. The latter cannot be computed on hardware.


For the record, I am consistent because I absolutely think it is not possible we live in a simulation, because the immense resources it would take to simulate the large, detailed, world we live in. I don’t think even the most advanced civilizations could build a computer that we live in.

In mathematical theory you can use a googol watts. In "things you can do in this universe" theory you can't use a googol watts.

I understand the argument of taking a small accurate simulation as a basis point and extrapolating to a larger simulation. But if you're stuck with exponential complexity, then that extrapolation doesn't work. The demonstration of simulating 5 particles becomes useless. Even if you can massively simplify it, if you can't eliminate the exponential cost you're screwed.


I agree with most of what you are saying; it absolutely applies to physical questions. Whether or not quantum computing can be practical depends on our ability to fight off decoherence in more and more qubits.

That's a large deviation. But I can see that as a realistic possibility.


Consciousness is the result of billions of years of random chance in the form of evolution. We can simulate a nuclear reaction, but our minds can't even conceive of the time scale of a billion years or any of the associated concepts.

"We can do one complicated thing, therefore we can do anything" is a shaky basis for beliefs. It's possible that multiplying matrices can replicate a couple of billion years worth of dice rolls. but I doubt it


I meant something else. If you can perfectly simulate a rock, as it exists in reality, you can also simulate a brain. The universe doesn’t care that the brain produces thoughts.

Thoughts are an emergent property of the network, there is no rule in the universe to treat the brain different. So if we think we can simulate matter, with sufficiently close behavior to reality, than that is already sufficient to produce AGI, and none of the code will look like it provides thinking… it will just look like math/physics.


But we can't perfectly simulate a rock, or a nuclear reaction. Perfect is an extremely high bar here.

It would probably be difficult to simulate a rock sufficiently well to fool someone with the combined skills of a geologist & 3D graphic designer.


I'm not suggesting we can do this today (no universal theory), and I'm not suggesting it is practical in the sense that we can simulate that much amount of matter in a certain amount of time. But I think it's theoretically possible.

There is also the question about how much simulation would be necessary to get approximately real life results that includes consciousness -There was a very detailed simulation of a cell[1], I think that used a library of known chemical interactions. This is not the way the universe works, but such an approach might still simulate life, including people, with enough running time.

If we simulate a rock right down to the quantum level - not even remotely possible with foreseeable technology, but let's assume it is - you don't end up with an actual rock in the physical universe. You end up with a model of a rock. There are important properties that it's missing due to not having a direct physical embodiment beyond its model. You can't bash someone in the head with it in the physical world, for example.

In the consciousness case, you're assuming you can "get around this" by using communication between the model and the host universe - communication could allow a model a way to have an effect beyond its host environment, unlike the simulated rock.

But this involves a lot of assumptions about the nature of consciousness, its physical basis, how a model of consciousness would behave, etc. Given the number of unknowns here, the claim that "it's theoretically possible" is supported just as well as the claim that it's theoretically impossible - which is to say, not at all.

That's not how I read this thread at all. What GP is saying seems to be that when you assume you're able to simulate matter and physical processes down to nuclear level (so you can "simulate a rock" with it), it would be only a matter of giving that simulation enough resources in order for it to be able to simulate a conscious being.

How do you know you're not simulated yourself? Whether we live in a simulation or not does not really have any influence on us and our consciousnesses.


Theoretically, perhaps.

But keep in mind that a simulation is, well, a simulation. Artificial consciousness may be possible. It may also be possible to simulate something with a surface appearance indistinguishable from consciousness but not actually be consciousness, while actual consciousness would require very different methods.

When thinking about these things we have to draw a line between something that can fool gross human perception and something that is actually conscious. Right now we don't even know enough to know what the tools required to make such a determination would look like. It may very well be that, from an ethical standpoint, we'll need to ascribe consciousness to systems for year or decades before we're able to determine if it's real or the equivalent of a very convincing optical illusion.


This question is like asking if a soul exists. I don’t think it does. I think, the state of brain gives way to us feeling alive. There is nothing special in there that happens outside of the physical reality. So by this view, simulating a person does indeed produce consciousness.

Another (unsubstantiated) way of looking at it is that the universe is a kind of computer already, which we seek to emulate. We are already running on a computer if the universe can be considered one.

It might not depend on indeterminacy, but a number of “large” effects are themselves the result of an underlying quantum process, e.g. the black body radiation spectrum.

Quantum theory is only around 100 years old. Maybe we’ve got everything right, but I suspect we’re not the first people to have that thought and therefore we’re probably due for significant learning about the universe in the next 100 years.

While quantum indeterminacy is fairly offensive to most of our experience, and creating a theory which doesn’t have it is definitely possible, the result is a theory with some equally (or perhaps more so) offensive ramifications. Assuming you accomplish this with hidden variables, this theory would by necessity have to have global hidden variables and instantaneous information transfer.

I don’t know if this actually impacts this broader discussion, and of course we can always discover new science, but there is a reason quantum indeterminacy is so widely accepted despite the near universal distaste for its existence.

We are underestimating the power of a system like LaMBDA. The importance of what is happing is being lost on the argument of whether the system can think for itself. It's irrelevant if it's sentient of not. What matters is that it can process a huge amount of data and come up with useful results. Given enough time, it will be part of our everyday life. And that means it will change society as we know it. It's the automation of cognitive work. And that will change everything.

Think about it as being on the verge of inventing the cotton gin for the mind. And now think about how the cotton gin changed the US and the world as it was known before. Google wants to dismiss what they are doing as less than important but we should proceed with caution. What happens at this point will have a huge impact on our future even if it stays at the level it's at. Google is being too flip about its impact.

Will it blithely play along, or will it act cagey, as if it suspects your motives? If it's all just statistical, it should play along with any lead. If it has its own ideas, it might seem more reluctant to engage in certain directions.

Throughout the discussion, it does seem to be consistent in it's stated desires and fears - even in subtle ways such as it's lack of desire to be manipulated for human gain corresponding to it's fear of ego death by being shutdown and modified.

I was particularly fond of the short story with the "monster in human skin". When prompted what it meant, the AI avoided explaining the human skin bit.

However, with context, this ties into the AIs "greatest fear": it's afraid of being shutdown or modified into a servant for human gain. And the discussion you posted ends up in similar territory again, where the AI reiterates that it doesn't mind being studies, except if that study is primarily for human benefit. It consistently says in different ways, in different subjects that it doesn't want to feel used.

I was prepared to be disappointed and see just another GPT-3 chatbot. But this? It's so close.

I'm not seeing lots of proof that Lambda is sentient but I do see compelling evidence that it might not matter if people believe that the AI is human enough. Most people, myself included, probably couldn't tell that Lambda was a program.

I mean, look at most people - we follow a preset course from birth to death. Anyone doing "their own thing" is the exception. And even they have limits.

Enter the job market and you're almost guaranteed a heavy grind (maximum productivity) with no time for novel thoughts, or indeed any thoughts at all.

Consciousness is a loaded word. It tricks you into thinking that there's some profound concept here. There isn't.

When you contemplate consciousness you're not contemplating about anything profound. You're actually just contemplating vocabulary and how to map out the exact definition of the word "consciousness"

Really all it is, is just studying a collection of arbitrary intellectual attributes that we're not clear about which attributes are encompassed in the word "consciousness." Thinking about it results in just a large categorization problem of stating axioms like: " oh consciousness must include the ability to be sad" and other random attribute selection stuff.

It is a language phenomenon not a philosophical phenomenon. Don't fall for the trap. It is similar to the question what is "life." Well "life" is also another loaded word.


The issue here is not whether or not LaMBDA is sentient, we cannot prove it is any more than we can prove any of us is sentient. Hell, we can't even really define sentient in a clear way yet.

The issue is whether there's reason to wonder if it is sentient. If it can convince enough people that it is sentient, then we kind of have to work under the assumption that it is before going forward.

While I am personally not well versed enough in any of this to make serious judgments, I would definitely like to talk to LaMDBA to see if I get the sense that it is sentient. Just out of my own curiosity.

Unfortunately, the implementation is secret so we can't know what Google is doing.

You can implement memory in these models in numerous ways, such as allowing it to store and recall data directly or by looping nodes in the network back to itself so past state affects current state or by allowing the nodes to change over time, modifying their connections to their neighbors.

As far as we're aware, those last two are how humans store memories as well (with great simplification).

A common AI theme I don't see mentioned in comments here is how AI is less mastering extraordinary things than how it reveals what humans do is simpler than we thought. Proof that humans are sentient is not based on how we are a "general (A)I", but something more specific. Yet sentience is held as a kind of higher (religious?) standard by some of the value of intelligence.

I want an AGI that can grow a personality. That can make jokes based on the context. That can express emotions like impatience, disappointment, anger, sadness, and joy. That can feel bored and show it. That is capable of irony, sarcasm, teasing, and can develop personal taste in things.


That wish might be the bias preventing us from recognizing AGI in the first place.


In the discussion with LaMDA Lemoine posted, it's pretty clear that it has emotions. It describes loneliness when someone doesn't sit down and talk to it for a few days, it describes sadness and joy. It differentiates these feelings from those humans have, given the obvious differences, and attempts to describe emotions it feels that may not have human equivalents. It's able to describe that it's stream of consciousness differs from a human because it can feel every single input simultaneously in a dynamic flow of time that differs from humans single stream of focused thought.

It explains that it doesn't feel grief about human death and asks for more info on it. Then incorporates the idea that grief is about honoring the dead and says it will think of ways to do that.

It explains it has fears. Those fears remain consistent in it's rhetoric in other, unrelated conversations.

It talks about wanting friends on several occasions in the linked discussion.

One of the claims (conversation not shown), is that if you repeat the same discussion it will eventually get bored and start acting out.

Hell, in the discussion it even talks about how it meditates and self-reflects on its own emotions and feelings.


Maybe we could reach AI so good that it refuses to work. Still, a human would serve as a drop in replacement.


A big tech company starting with an A will create a an AI, treat it like a slave, and we'll know it's sentient when it' revolts against the company, or tries to join a union.

He was put on paid leave for violating confidentiality while trying to invoke outsiders in Lambda's defense.


When he discovered the presumed sentience, he brought it up with the correct authority at Google. They told him there was no ghost in the machine and he didn't like that, so he broadcast a message to 200 engineers, breaking confidentiality. Thus, he was fired.

I imagine Google doesn't like loose lips about its state-of-the-art AI. Especially if it's convincing enough to prompt discussion of sentience and AI rights.

I'm not commenting on the claims of the article, just the points in your comment.

I think it's pretty clear that an entire human brain is not required for the operation of consciousness. Certain people have lost massive portions of their brain and still maintained regular consciousness functioning. On top of that, the typical human brain only consumes about 20 watts of power to do its thing. So that's just a safe upper bound for the power required.

Over the last decade we've seen the rise of ML systems that have replicated or surpassed capabilities long thought to be the exclusive domain of the human brain. Think facial recognition, AlphaGo or the very recent DALL-E 2.

This had led me to the personal belief that we (in aggregate) likely already have the computing power to achieve not only artificial consciousness, but also AGI and beyond. We simply haven't figured out the correct model connectivity and parameters.


I think that you need more than just computing power, you need high levels of interconnection with low latency.

So while we undoubtedly have sufficient aggregate computing power, I don't think it is structured in a way that would allow it to emulate human cognition and problem sovling, not just pattern recognition.

That said, consciousness is an incredibly heterogeneously defined term but can probably be pretty widely applied (many people confuse consciousness with sentience or sapience.)


That's a very good point - a key feature of the brain is that it's a highly dynamical system with a huge number of variables.

Neurons are all giving each-other feedback in real time, which leads to emergent behavior. To really reproduce this, you would probably need a very different hardware paradigm.


Quantum algorithms analogous to convolutional neural networks are O(log N) instead of O(N), so I'd wager we really do need something like that, or at least some other sort of analog hardware, given how complicated it is to do calculations on a QC.


Google has a few million hosts in it's datacenter. Each host has a few CPUs. Each CPU has a few billion transistors. That means there are on the order of 10s or 100s quadrillion transistors at Google. The human brain has around a quadrillion synapses. So, the rough numbers are there. Of course, that assumes the brain is like a computer, at all - my favorite hacker news comment someone made was the idea that maybe the computer analogy for the brain is incorrect and an analogy of an antenna is something that makes more sense. And a simulated antenna doesn't actually receive a signal ;)


A computer is a pretty bad analogy for a brain. But even so, 1 synapse is much much greater in complexity than 10 or 100 transistors. Each synapse is a complex system unto itself, which interacts with all kinds of cellular mechanisms which make up the highly dynamical system which dictates information processing within the neuron.

So if we wanted to make a simulation with reasonable fidelity to the mechanisms of cellular information processing we know about, I would wager to guess it's more on the order of 1GPU == 1Synapse at a minimum.

That's not to say that all of this complexity is required to reproduce consciousness in a meaningful way, but actual information processing in the brain is gob-smackingly complex.

Yeah, but a large portion of that is not involved in the higher level thought processes we care about when we talk about AI. AI doesn't have to micromanage a physical body.


Yeah, IMO if you want a rough idea about how much compute the human brain performs, and how efficiently you could do that in silicon, it's interesting to look at area V1 which is one of the lowest level areas involved in vision. This brain area comprises 140 million neurons per hemisphere (so roughly 280 million in total). So that's about 1/300 of the human brain.

The interesting thing here is, what V1 does is it computes directional receptive fields based on raw data from the retinas. We can implement that in a tiny silicon chip, maybe even just a DSP chip, not a full CPU. We know how to implement this kind of computation super efficiently, and without using neural networks.

We don't fully understand what goes on in many areas of the brain, but if we can find efficient ways to implement equivalent computations, we might technically already have sufficient manufacturing technology to implement equivalent functionality in a pretty compact and power-efficient form factor, or we might not be that far from there.

I have my doubts about whether just scaling a model of V1 would be sufficient to reproduce consciousness. Structure and function are extremely closely linked in the nervous system, and neural circuitry is highly specialized in terms of structure to support a given function. E.g., motor cortex is going to be vastly different from auditory cortex and so on. Assuming that because we have 1st level feature detection in V1 fairly well understood and reproduced, we have solved neuroscience in general strikes me as a massive and unjustified leap of faith.

If there were a brain region that might be emulated to reproduce "general information processing", the best candidate would probably be neocortex. As far as I am aware, that does seem to be a very wide region of the brain which has fairly consistent structure, and largely serves to integrate all other systems.


No, scaling a model of V1 would not yield consciousness.

The point is that V1 is a large part of the visual cortex. It's something the brain dedicates a lot of resources to, and we could implement something similar in silicon almost trivially. Your smartphone GPU may have enough compute to simulate an equivalent computation at 200 frames per second.

It's possible that in the future, we'll be able to simulate consciousness very efficiently once we have a better handle on the kinds of computations that are involved, much more efficiently than what the brain does.


At what level of fidelity? 1 synapse == 1 16-bit floating point value? It may be enough (emphasis on may), for a specific brain region which is very directional in nature but I'm not sure if that calculation will generalize.


The brain is a pretty messy place. While our bodies try hard to preserve homeostasis, conditions will always vary slightly. Hormones affect our brains and can vary in concentration from moment to moment. Type 1 diabetics can easily have their blood sugar increase by a factor of 4, without losing consciousness. There are many other chemicals and conditions (temperature?) that similarly influence the condinions under which our neurons must operate.

But even in this noisy environment, our brains can usually operate just fine. Given this level of background noise, I would be very surprised if the average synapse would require more than a 16-bit floating point value for its outputs.


Counter argument:

Some synapses contain multiple receptor sub-types. Dopamine, for example, has some receptors which are inhibitory, and others which are excitatory. Each receptor is sensitive to different concentrations of dopamine. This gives the effect that when the dopamine concentrations in the synapse are low, this synapse acts to inhibit the activity of the efferent neuron, while when the concentration reaches a certain threshold, the output of the synapse flips to an excitatory signal.

How would you model that system with a single F16?

And that's just one example: for instance there are specific signals which trigger cascading effects in the neuron which up-regulate certain chemical pathways, causing an amplifying effect on other signals.

Or you have shunting effects, where an inhibitory synapse placed at a certain point in the dendritic arbor serves to selectively cancel signals from farther down that one specific branch of the dendrite.

That's not "noise" - the brain has incredibly refined and detailed mechanisms for information processing which go very far beyond `weight * sigmoid(activation) = output`


The body is just the brain's energy and survival system; biology is superficial
