I have been saying this is the case for years, and the reason why is fish.

We literally cannot tell the difference between discrete species of fish without genetic testing, how are you going to look me in the eye and tell me your Purple Maui Wowie or whatever has pure genetics?

As to indica / sativa, anybody who has grown their own can tell you that growing techniques have a huge effect on perceived effects. If you harvest earlier, the effect is more Sativa-ish and waiting for amber trichomes means a more Indica feel.

Take the outer glass envelope off a mercury vapor light; it will provide nasty UV for your plants. I've seen black plants of insane potency grown this way.

(Fade the light in from a few minutes a day, to always present as a supplement at the beginning of flowering. Can burn leaves and sunburn skin with this, so caution is required)

Black, as in, darkest-green chlorophyll color?

Darkest purples. Wild looking stuff. It negatively impacts yeild and health of the plant; but produces fancy stress flavors.

The article also says researches were surprised with how consistent certain strains are across different growing regions.
