If there was any big variation between those worse and best "major centers", there would have been an examination and heads would have rolled (plus lawsuits). Big differences in death rates is not what differentiates a worse and a better clinic.

Forget clinics, but surely the best surgeons have far higher success rates than the worst?

The best surgeons often work with more of the most complex cases, which makes it difficult to naively compare death rates.
