That is literally the first thing I've encountered as a new immigrant to Germany. This scheme is ubiquitous here that nobody even considers it especially dishonest, it's up to the customer to be careful.

they can't just override the law with their own Terms and Conditions

but yes, the scheme is very popular among telcos


They don’t override anything - did you read the T&Cs? It clearly states you can get a full refund within 14 days of purchase.


Gyms and online services too. Widerrufsrecht is useful, but if you are not aware of this scheme you're likely to miss this term.
