Above or below, it would seem to be the same amount of stress where the wing joins the fuselage?



They meant as opposed to under the fuselage. If the wings are directly supported, the root does not bear the weight.

...how exactly are you imagining gear above the wing?


This is the sort of problem that some astute design calculations should be able to disentangle. ;)

Maybe they were using a topology optimizer driven by reinforcement learning to come up with the initial Pareto front.
