Very overrated, imo.

When I was a kid my dad would take me to the office where I'd play on actual IBM PCs (we had a clone at home) and I loved the mechanical keyboards, although I didn't dislike the non-mechanical one at home.

As I got older I pined for a mechanical keyboard. Then I discovered that other people missed them too. Then they started making them again.

I've tried them a number of times. They are a novelty that satisfies nostalgia for a few minutes.

Then I try to do some actual work on one and realize that they are annoying and loud, and the keys require way too much force and travel.

I'll take any generic, modern, low-profile, laptop-style keyboard. They're just so much easier to type on.
