Overall pretty well written. But mostly the name, "Curious Observer's guide" is great. It describes so much of what I am looking for - something between an expert and novice. Something that does not insult my intelligence but does not require years of study.
I know exactly what you mean. It seems there is a lack of such non-insulting-to-the-reader scientific writing: things are either too advanced (FEBE = written for experts, by experts), or to basic and without any scientific content bound a tenuous analogy or two, so it's refreshing when one encounters good non-technical scientific explanations...
