Overall pretty well written. But mostly the name, "Curious Observer's guide" is great. It describes so much of what I am looking for - something between an expert and novice. Something that does not insult my intelligence but does not require years of study.

I know exactly what you mean. It seems there is a lack of such non-insulting-to-the-reader scientific writing: things are either too advanced (FEBE = written for experts, by experts), or to basic and without any scientific content bound a tenuous analogy or two, so it's refreshing when one encounters good non-technical scientific explanations...

Well, I estimated for a friend of my that Roger Penrose's "The road to reality" would take about 20 years of intense study to master from scratch.

Leonard Susskind's books and lectures are very good on this, and they are very approachable.
