Just released my new Pinboard app for iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur called Pins. I've been looking for a good Pinboard app but most have been discontinued or rarely have any updates in the last few years. So I took the matter in my own hands and built one. Pins is free to try — give it a look if you're a happy Pinboard user like me!
Hi, I was just looking for a good iPadOS bookmark app last night, so I was surprised to see this. I downloaded your app but I have a question: do I have to connect/login to pinboard in order to create a new bookmark? I tried clicking “Done” button and the app does nothing.
Yeah your Pinboard account has to be connected in order to create a new bookmark. You can either use your Pinboard username/password combo or just the API token. Your password isn't stored on the device anyway — it's just used to retrieve the API token and save you a few clicks.
So far this looks great. The share interface seems nice which is about the only thing I use these apps for to be honest. Anything that makes that faster to fill out is a win in my books.
Browsing your old bookmarks and looking for something you saved in the past is valuable as well. Pins comes with full-text search support and a On This Day page for all your nostalgic need.
Hah I just did an update saying I paid for this app and would be up for paying a yearly subscription for a solid updated iOS and Mac pinboard app.
Pushpin has been the gold standard for me since I got it years ago.
I have yet to see any other browser extension, mobile, or desktop app tell me how many times I’ve used a tag when entering them. I absolutely adore that feature. Also offline archive support. Not sure if any one else provides that either.
I would still like a handful of features spread between Spillo and especially/mainly Pushpin, which is the gold standard for me. Just like with Pushpin, I’ll pay for a solid Pinboard app just to support it. Hopefully you continue updating!
I know SaaS for software like apps is frowned upon here, but I’d be cool paying $10-25 a year (when paying annually) for a solid Pinboard app across iOS and Mac.
Are tag auto complete on the horizon? I use tagging a lot and it is really hard to tag without.
Also one amazing feature Pushpin has I haven’t seen elsewhere is they also tell you how many times you have used a tag during auto complete. If this could be available cross platform, it would be amazing.
There's tag completion in the free-to-try version! Just start typing in the Tags field and Pins will offer you the 3 most used tags that matches it above the keyboard.
Thank you for this! I've been unhappy with the iOS options recently (bugs, no one replying to bug reports, etc). So far your app is working better than the other choices and it handled my 15k+ bookmark collection easily.
The most important feature for me is being able to use the iOS share function and quickly add something with tags (and tag auto-complete). It would have been nice to test that ahead of the in-app purchasing but decided to go for it. Happy that all works well. Great work.
Tag autocomplete is available after purchasing? I didn’t see it under the list of unlock features.
Though I’d probably be more interested in how the Mac app works unless Pins also gets Pushpin’s feature of showing you how many times you’ve used tags during auto complete.
Tag autocompletion is available in the free-to-try version as well. When you start typing in the Tags fields, 3 most used tags matching that query will show up above the keyboard.
The Mac app is based on Catalyst and 99% feature equivalent to the iOS version. More options to view how tags are used in your account is coming in later versions.
Just to clarify what I was saying, the iOS share extension (including tags and tag-autocompletion) is the most important feature to me and the share extension is only available after unlock. Tag autocompletion will work elsewhere as the author replied.
Actually the share extension is available before unlocking with one limitation: You can use it once every 5 minutes. Something weird may be going on with iOS so sometimes you have to restart the device for new share extensions to show up. This is outside my control.
Cool. I also saw "Save to Pinboard share extension" on the list of unlock features which also led me to believe it was only available that way. Anyhow, it's working well and thanks again.
This looks promising. I've been looking for a new Pinboard iOS client, since Pushpin started flaking out on me recently.
(I have over 17,000 bookmarks, so maybe I'm an edge case, but Pushpin has been timing out on me a lot. Maybe I should just clean up my bookmarks...)
For what it's worth, I haven't been able to get it to download my bookmarks, using either my username/password or API key. And I tried it on both my iPhone and iPad.
That sounds weird. I know this is not ideal but you can also use the password option - it isn’t stored on device and only used once to retrieve the API token. All subsequent requests use that token as well.
I added that so less savvy users can still log in easily without having to hunt for the token.
I'm not sure if this is related, but I had a similar problem the other day with ReadPaperback in using my token to allow access to my Pinboard account.
The dev responded really quickly:
> "I’m not sure why but it looks like pasting a token on both Safari and Focus change part of the token to be lowercase and I wasn’t properly handling the different case."
Glad to know! The apps are free-to-try and you have access to pretty much every feature with some limitations. It's built for modern devices running iOS 14 and Big Sur so system integration is prioritized well: Spotlight support, Shortcuts integration, Widgets, etc.
