Since then there's been a lot of wind farms installed in Hawaii and most homes have solar powered water heaters (from personal observation). Talking to locals in Maui most aren’t very happy with the wind farms. They’re considered an eye sore and they were sold under the pretense of lower electricity bills which never happened.
