I understand the desire to tinker and learn. And still do a lot of it. But for my household infrastructure, I want it plug & play. A couple of Synology NAS, one for storage, one for backup & failover, a hardware firewall/reverse proxy/pihole container/wireguard container on a separate, hardened box. I sleep well at night and I don't have to explain to the wife why email/calendar/file sync/backup/notes/etc/etc isn't working today.

I won't say it is for everyone, and if the OP is happy with his setup, so be it, but I wouldn't say it is a path that most should wander down if they place any kind of value on their personal time.
