Lenovo to Sell ThinkPad X1 and Nearly 30 Other PCs with Ubuntu Preloaded (forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho)

I dual boot an x1 with windows and Ubuntu. It's shocking how much more performant Ubuntu is. Runs at lower temp (very noticable on thin laptops), smoother, switches between applications faster, everything just runs faster. Ubuntu + X1 is an amazing combo.

Actually curious if in 10 years, Linux will slowly become the defacto Laptop, PC and Workstation Operating system of choice

Ah the fabled year of the Linux desktop.

Perhaps always 10 years away.

This is great - typing this from a X1 7th gen where on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS the internal microphone still does not show up and the 4.0 speakers sound way too crisp (after I upgraded from 19.10, might need to do a fresh installation).

If you want latest bleeding edge support, install Arch or one its more friendly variants such as Manjaro. They provide updates everyday.

One thing to note, as Manjaro is a rolling distro, don't be surprised to download about 400Mb per day in updates

I’ll second that! Manjaro is my longest running installation of a desktop Linux. I’ve got it on three workstations since 2018 and it’s still running perfectly.

Every other desktop distro has shit the bed after an update for me.

That's great to hear. I would love to run Manjaro also but i can't download 400Mb per day.

If they provided a semi-rolling release, now that would be something i'd be interested in

They definitely don't offer 400mb of updates every single day. You also don't have to apply updates every time they offer them.

If you waited to apply updates once every 3 months you'd be fine.

I don't understand the benefits of using Manjaro over Endeavour OS. I have not heard anything good about that Manjaro only how badly they treat contributors, maybe it's just my echo-chamber but that's the impression.

Endeavour OS had some turbulence recently with their devs, but in terms of pros, i don't think there is much difference, personally Manjaro seems to have more support, so if you get stuck, your chances of help may be better

Manjaro is more well known, but so are it's practises.... EndevourOS will get it's well earned moment to start shining in the light very soon I believe.

That's so tragic. "Might need a fresh install" used to be a windows thing.

I agree. I fiddled with some alsa settings to get stuff going with 18.04, then 19.10 and now on 20.04 LTS (where microphone should be working), these changes break stuff.

Try updating to the latest kernel. I had major sound issues until I updated to bleeding edge.

Will it mean a reduction in price? Since Lenovo is not paying for the Windows license fee for those laptops?

Or will it mean an increase in price since they won't be able to make deals to include pack-in software?

With the Fedora versions announced earlier there was a price break for not getting Windows. Not positive with this but it's not an unreasonable expectation.

No Windows and no Intel gonna result in a really nice discount

I've been running Linux laptops for many years and I only use Lenovo now (if I cared more about build quality I'd probably go Dell though). I am super excited about this. Absolutely amazing development!

I have the Dell XPS with Ubuntu preloaded. Happy to see another company also offering this.

Dare I say...2021 will be the year of the Linux desktop...LOL

First Fedora now Ubuntu I wonder which distro will be next.

one could dream that it would be Arch

As much as I love Arch, I expect that would be a support nightmare for Lenovo :-D
