Perhaps they haven't read Seymore Papert "Mindstorms" Here is the thing. The computer can simulate more or less anything so when dealing with abstract concepts such as math, what better way is there than to combine math with experimentation.

And once you've struggled to solve the problems that can't be brute forced away, you start wondering if maybe a little linear algebra wouldn't do you good...
