Are they though? You can buy a fairly nice old-school TI microcontroller - or you can buy an ARM with enough onboard RAM to run Java, program it like you're writing a phone app, and pay a similar price. Battery consumption will be worse, but are your users going to notice?

If it's IOT, yes definitely. Some things you don't want to plug in every day--they have to run 10yrs on battery. TI is pretty good in that space.


TI has a reasonable set of ARM microcontroller offerings in the TM4C lineup. Nothing unique but plenty workable.
