ranger uses vi directly inside the terminal, when you quit vi you are back to ranger in the same terminal. ranger is also .git aware.

on the other hand, grep/find GNU tools all should be upgraded to ignore .git/node_modules/pip-site-packages by default, and honor .gitignore,etc.
