It basically has two states: 'on' and 'off'.
However, it DOES serve an artistic purpose.
If you get a decent pressing of Motörhead's 'No Sleep 'til Hammersmith', though, you'd be surprised at the dynamic range actually offered, contrary to popular (mis)conceptions about the Motörhead sound... :)
