Ask HN: How do you maintain reliable cognition?

Over the last year I've delved into the world of chess. While the game is fascinating, I'm more fascinated by my changing cognitive abilities.

Many days I'm simply unable to play a good game, as if my "cognitive" drive is completely drained. The will to think deeply (or, honestly, even shallowly) is missing. Other days I'm extremely confident in my moves and I perform well in tactics and games.

The difference is quite jarring and I'm curious about it. With these observations, I'm also seeing this same concept applying across my entire life -- My ability to hold a great conversation, make great code at work, write out thoughtful directions.

I don't feel alone, there are plenty of people who experience this "brain fog" on a daily basis, but I'm having difficulty finding resources to overcome it. A full night's rest and an improved diet works wonders for me, but it only seems to be going so far.

Do you relate, HN? What have you tried? What works for you?
