I think this is key. In the sports arena, the metrics are VERY clear: if you don't win games, and your stats are poor, you're fired.
I understand where academics are coming from, but at the same time it seems like many people want to be isolated from any objective assessment of their performance at all. FWIW, I see this a LOT among software developers as well.
