IMO the upper limit should be a couple hours, but I'm not sure that should be communicated to the people interviewing because it can stress people out.

There are a few problems with using GitHub or BitBucket profiles. First, not everybody has them, or they don't update them frequently, or whatever. Second, it's pretty easy to fake a GitHub profile by copy/pasting code from other places, using other people's code, or pushing broken stuff that doesn't really work. And third, a lot of people's GitHub profiles are cluttered up with a bunch of forked repos that they haven't even pushed code to and don't really contribute to at all.
