That seems like a horrible idea:

1. Do you really want the rust compiler to run at the speed of an llm?

2. Compiler optimisations are already extremely unpredictable with deterministic compilers[1], I hate to think how unpredictable your compiler would be.

3. What if someone else wants to build the software, do they have to decide on optimisations now? What if the optimisation depends on your features not available on old generations of CPU? (There is a reason we don’t compile with -march=native)

4. Compilers already have “unsafe” optimisations, but people rarely enable them (-ffast-math)

You misunderstand me. I'm saying that the developers can make these optimizations with LLMs, at the source level, and thus they don't need to be added to compilers.

Like just open Claude Code and ask it to find optimizations. That's the right place for this kind of optimization.

What do you mean "might"? I can crank Fable or Sol up to max intelligence and they'll spend an hour reviewing my rust SDK for working with our ADLSgen2's, and it'll still be done before the rust compiler has compiled the same project.

Also, if you are not using a big CDN (e.g. Cloudflare), you still need to pay for the traffic (even if you don't pay as much for the CPU). This is doubly true for smaller CDNs like Bunny.


Not only is it an example, it specifically is one of the first things I use to test experimental features so I get data back instantly.

You also need to pay for the traffic it takes to server you bot check scripts. And outside of big cloud companies, traffic is actually dirt cheap.

I think it is still compute-heavy if not compute-hard, and stuff like WASM SIMD makes it less compute heavy (not really available in JS). And also, for memory bound problems, you probably don't want the JS GC needing to clean up afterwards when WASM gives you that control.

I assume that SIMD acceleration is usable with WebCrypto, but I have no evidence either way. It's also not part of WebAssembly so there's that to consider too lol

I think it is more likely they are just drinking their own koolaid (and their friends are too). They are paid to bring in investor dollars, which requires lofty promises.


I want to believe that, but I do wonder. The surveillance powers are immense for such technology. Forget the magical "SAI" stuff. It would also be a perfect cause for hyperscaling: total coverage.

That's just nostalgia. Why do we set the bar at windows XP paint instead of windows 1.01 paint which was different? Probably because winXP paint is the one we grew up with, and also the best version. But if we said no new features ever, we'd be stuck on win1.01 paint. The best version of Paint was a complete UI redesign away from the original.

I don't so much mind about Paint, but modern Notepad is completely unusable. We had "Notepad but with Rich Text formatting" -- it was called WordPad and no-one used it so they eventually deleted it.

the issue, as i see it, is that they took two tools with two different user communities and slammed them together

last place i worked at had internal telemetry on end user machines. i dont know the way it was being used, although i suspect it was a document viewer.


People used Wordpad and thus other people had trouble opening RTF files.


The people who still use Windows yet complain about this are quite confusing to me. There's been every indication that it will keep going like this for years now, and the cost of switching is just not that high. If you're still riding that train it's time to just embrace it.

For you. I mean, obviously it's still high enough that they're not switching. Beside the point, I'm bouncing between the different OSes at home and work, and honestly they're all deeply broken in different ways that require significant effort to make the best of it. I get people hate ads, so Windows is at the bottom of the list, but honestly I could care less for that additional 2 min of initial tweak when I'm spending half a day doing the setup anyway.

On Notepad stopping being raw text only, the main issue to me would be the safety it provided. Being first party meant never having to care about security (e.g. the company getting bought by a random malware vendor) or availability.

What confuses me is how people think theres anything close to an alternative for corporate environments.

Windows isnt Windows. Windows is the best supported OS by the Microsoft cloud stack. They get away with this sort of nonsense because large corps have nowhere to go.

Lol, lmao even. The cost of switching one laptop to linux is quite low. The cost of taking an enterprise using Microsoft everywhere to linux is something else entirely.

I think a lot of large corps could function quite well with a model like: (a) allow employees to choose a MacBook instead; (b) use various macOS enterprise management tools (such as Jamf); (c) use Windows virtual desktops for Windows-only apps

The main reason many don’t isn’t because this strategy won’t work - it is because it would cost them significantly more than a Windows-only strategy. So they won’t do it, or they will but limit it to only certain job functions (engineering, executives, sales) where the business benefit is clearer

The problem with adding Linux to the mix, is the variability of hardware and distributions can make it a lot more complex to manage, compared to a Windows-only or Windows+Mac fleet. And you also need people in your IT org with the skillset to handle it

Yeah VDI is getting close to universal adoption, but security is always where things come back to. Eventually an end user is going to have something sensitive on their macbook, and they will have fallen through some sort of compliance gap.

Its easier from a compliance standpoint to control everything permissible.


I’m not sure why you were downvoted. I have to use Windows for work. The barrier to entry is simply lower for many system administrators and users alike. The homogeneity of a Windows rollout is extremely attractive. You are going to have a hard sell getting your accounting team and receptionist onto Linux. Your developers will complain and make do. I love complaining about Windows!

Oh, my sweet summer child. Please realise that such blanket statements like that are profoundly ignorant. (Note: I'm running an entirely Windows-free household. )

The problem is changing the way companies build themselves up to work. Business logic. Even for medium-sized companies (100-1000 heads), what you're proposing is paying scores of business analysts months (years?) worth of time to review business processes, before you even get the teams of IT people to start making the switchover.

And that's not even taking into considering the fact that many large software packages simply do not work under nix and there is no realistic alternative. Basically every industry related to engineering simply cannot switch.

The processes and systems required to build Big Things in the real world are gargantuan and terrifying and sickening. Companies spend hundreds of millions every year putting up with Microsoft's bullshit because there is no alternative.

There's a wide, wide gap between adding features that your users need and adding features that you want to cram down their throats to promote other products that you want them to use.

What if this applied in a photography class? The instructor owns the equipment and helped “set up” the photo. Does the instructor own the copyright?

In cinema it works the same as in software engineering. There is an exception to normal copyright law where works made in the course of employment are treated as if the author is the employer rather than the actual author of the work. Its known in copyright law as a "work for hire" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_for_hire

Not paying anyone would be a violation of minimum wage laws. Or it would mean they are truly equal partners in the project who have no "employer" they are working under. In which case it does seem most fair that they would all own the copyrights to their contributions absent some other agreement to assign copyright.

No, because they're already paid to do that job. And a director is paid too - he doesn't have any copyright for his work. The employer does.


I think there is an easy test: if you didn’t write it, it’s not yours.

If we go back 10 years and your friend says “I have an idea for an app, here it is,” and you build it, you own the copyright because you wrote it.

You give an idea to the pile of math calculated of the stolen work of humanity, the math owns it (which it can’t, so no one owns it).

No matter how detailed of a conversation you have with a friend, I don’t think they have justification to claim copyright over code written by you.

Actually, in Germany, copyright remains with the author and their heirs until seventy years after the author's death; it cannot be sold or given away, even if someone paid them doing it. Instead, there is "Verwertungsrecht" or "Nutzungsrecht" ("License", "Usage right"). In the USA, copyright can be sold completely to another legal entity.

I think the copyright should go to the tool creator in that case, if the tool is acting as an extension of the creator.

But if the tool is created from collective human creation, the copyright should belong to all humanity, not the person who triggered the tool.

If you trained an LLM entirely on your own input, I think you should own the output, but that is not the case for any widely-used llm.

This statement can be applied to literally any topic and it fills me with a dread that is only matched by trying to fathom the inifinite nature of the universe and time. The notion of having good faith, well intentioned debate and discourse around any conceivable subject just feels impossible most of the time.


That was my point. People disagree about this topic. I happen to agree that climate change is a real and imminent problem (though probably not, with the previous commenter, about its solution space). Pointing to public opinion about smoking in the 1950s is a conclusory argument; it doesn't get us anywhere.
