[dev here] The Internet access is required only for the daily wallpapers and nothing else. The messages pop up based on date. Many users seem to like it but if I hear any more complaints, I'll consider removing them.
Thanks for the clarification (and your work on Olauncher)! I knew I should have checked the source code before posting my comment. I don't think they need to be removed, but I would appreciate an option to disable them.
Not who you replied to, but I would personally prefer them to be opt in. The most recent message was sweet, but it also felt a little intrusive or ad-like. Love the launcher!
I think you should mention the differences b/w Olauncher and your launcher in the readme. That will make it clear to people why they should give this a try.
Hey tanjunotes, i'm a big fan of your work and olauncher. Thanks, that you gave me with your work an insight in launcher development. And of course, thanks for the hints. I will add the differences to olauncher in the readme soon. I'm new to hackernews. I didn't read your answer, until now.
[Olauncher dev here] There's no Firebase integration in the Olauncher and never was. It literally collects no data. The releases on the Play Store, F-Droid and Github releases [APK] are all built from the same codebase, which is available on Github. Not sure why it's flagged.
I made a minimal Android launcher called Olauncher during the pandemic. It now has a million downloads with 4.8 rating. A year ago (Jan, 2023) I launched the pro version, called Pro Launcher, and it's doing well.
I have been using a solo WhatsApp group as my "notes app" for years. Quite common with Android users. But when I needed a dedicated notes app to get a little more organised, I couldn't find anything satisfactory. The popular notes app are way too complicated for my purpose. The lesser knowns usually don't have a good UI/UX. And there's also the issue of privacy.
OP here. I checked out your app and it's pretty good. I think I'll stick with no icon launcher. That way, users will have choices based on their preference of icon or no icon look. :)
