If only there would be a messenger with native iOs Phone/Tablet, Android Phone/Tablet, Windows, OSX and Linux apps... oh wait there is, it is called Telegram. And you don't even need your phone to use it.

Great, now I only need to convince everyone I know and meet to stop using Whatsapp ans switch to Telegram, sounds easy enough.

Friends don't let friends use Whatsapp (or anything owned by Facebook).

I bought an Ubuntu phone, not realizing that whatsapp wasn't available. Its a struggle getting people to switch.

Don't blockbuster movies make dozens of millions on a regular basis?!

> According to Lucasfilm, Return of the Jedi, despite having earned $475 million at the box office against a budget of $32.5 million, "has never gone into profit".

..because they're redefining profit "creatively".

This here! For 10 bucks a month I know I never have to worry about syncing music, whether something is available, etc.

How will you satisfy your desire to hoard crap and fill your house up with ever-increasingly dusty CDs?

How will you read the sleeve notes and who did a rubbish job of mastering and mixing this album?

God this spoke to me.

I'm in the midst of cleaning out our basement filled with old cassettes, VHS' and CDs. My siblings who moved out years ago, asked me to donate them or throw them away. So now I've got to spend hours sifting through piles of media to figure out what to do with them.

It's such a hassle. (Yes, First World Problem)

My parents as Costco users have this belief where having physical things, especially in bulk, is a key strategy in savings. They hate subscription models especially for digital formats. But what they fail to acknowledge is space is valuable too. The space lost around the house because of their buying habits and unwillingness to let things go (items that were bought on sale but never used, old clothes, magazines, books, media, etc.) is pretty sad.

I used to keep loads of DVDs etc. but after getting rid of lots of them, the house feels emptier and less cluttered (kind of like a clear desktop, no?)

My parents have the problem of hoarding things and they refuse to sort anything out, so it'll be a MASSIVE pain if/when anything happens to them and I have to sort it out. I will need to just have a bonfire or burn the house down or something.

This is still rather easy. You can change the UI (i.e. set the button into a "Loading..." state) directly after the click and when the server sends back the response act accordingly. An error would reset the button and prompt an error message.

Exactly. The difference is, this becomes the default behavior (minus the spinner), and simple to implement.

With rest, it would be a much more manually implemented feature. The default would be to just fail silently and potentially drop important data on the next page load.

What you must not forget is the fact that a bootcamp only costs you 8-12 weeks in full-time salary on top of the 10k, whereas a BSc costs you 3-4 years of full time salary. I don't think that all that many people would do highschool-bootcamp. Most people have a BSc and at least a semi technical background. For them a second BSc is not really an options because it would take them out of the loop for too long.

I have absolutely no idea what Brave actually is, even after watching the video. But nice to hear that Meteor can handle this. I would not want to see the Modulus bill... But still shows that performance in Meteor is very much following the 80/20 rule. Don't mess up the basics and Moore's Law will help you out.

thank you, I think I was the only one. I have no idea what Brave is. A sports app? something like quizz duel?

Popup email opt-ins need to die

unfortunately, they work.

WhatsApp is still a complete pain to use once you are used to Telegram. Wanna switch phones? Better get ready to backup all your messages by hand. Want to use something other than a phone? Here, use our shitty web app. Your phone is out of battery? sucks for you i guess!

>> Your phone is out of battery? sucks for you i guess!

??

Can you use telegram from another device? I think WhatsApp now has a windows client, maybe macos as well, recently announced.

No idea what the security is like though.

--edit-- Erm, I'm confused at the downvote, the parent raised a series of objections to WhatsApp and I asked for clarification of what they meant and suggested a non-phone client was available.

I've done the research now and it turns out to be utterly useless if your phone's out of batteries as it does some sort of sync'ing and relies on the phone being on, so it's not fit for the purpose.

But I'm still mystified at the downvote...

--edit 2-- More downvotes! Yay! Wtf?

You can use Telegram on any device you want at same time. PC, Phone, tablet, you name it.

WhatsApp on the other hand only works in one device (your phone). They released a webchat, that just works as a proxy to connect to your phone. So in order to use the WhatsApp web, you need your phone on and with internet connection.

People will probably continue downvoting you as long as you continue to complain about downvotes. Downvotes happen, whether randomly or because someone is having a bad day. Making a fuss out of it is counterproductive.

I'm not complaining really, I was just wondering why.

I upvoted you. Last time I tried it, using Whatsapp on your computer requires you to have the phone on. I think this is because the app on the phone holds your private key. I imagine this is also the reason why you can't use your whatsapp on a tablet or on multiple phones.

Maybe the downvotes (not from me, mind you) are silent complaints about your first question?

Because yes, you can.

That sounds good then :)

Interesting to see how Tokyo work culture impacts the co-working scene: A lot of them only open at 10 but stay open late in the evening. This is because, due to its size and property prices, many people commute up to 2 hours one way.

I don't follow. I know many salarypeople who have 1.5h+ commutes, because as you say central Tokyo is expensive. But if you're self-employed or doing a startup, why would you travel that far to a co-working space instead of just working from home?

Sooooo... government favouritism and sketchy business practices. Who would have thought?

The goal of the government is to maximize welfare.

I would say that in this case, your so-called "government favouritism" and "sketchy business practices" benefits citizens immensely.

"MTR trains boast a 99.9% on-time arrival rate. Fares are notoriously cheap ($.50 to $3)"
Moreover, a lot of systems that maximize public welfare are often monopolized and subsidized by the government. Do you think having myriad companies running various train tracks in a city would be beneficial? Or would one unified system make more sense? I think the evidence points to an unmistakable answer.
