Did he prove the lemma or did he leave it as an exercise :-) ?

Are you planning any features to help with online teaching (e.g. whiteboard support)?

Really timely question with so many school systems being closed down.

What you want is Google Hangouts but, unfortunately, nobody uses that.

I loved my G1. I didn't think it was that bad.

What's up with the commas in 10,00,00,000?

Possibly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_numbering_system (”30,000,000 (thirty million) rupees is referred to as "3 crore rupees", which is written as 3,00,00,000 rupees with commas at the thousand, lakh, and crore places”), but the writer seems a native Spanish speaker to me. Maybe the site has an editor from India?

"The Plague of Justinian, an epidemic that afflicted the Eastern Roman Empire, claimed nearly 10,00,00,000 lives. It was the worst epidemic in history, followed by the Black Plague."

This is the Indian way of segmenting large numbers. Interestingly enough I only found out about it myself last night.

It's the author giving you a hint that what follows is over 9000.

Please don't try to turn HN into Reddit.

Inability to understand reality will lead to the species' extinction. I guess that's indeed how it's supposed to work.

I wonder what that means for the American Institute of Mathematics (https://aimath.org/). It is partially sponsored by John Fry.

Having worked with AIM a lot over the years, I'm also very curious about this. In my experience, the people who work at AIM fulltime are very professional and experienced at putting together high quality grant proposals, and already receive substantial NSF funding. I'm thus optimistic that they can survive longterm without the direct support of John Fry.

Yeah, but right now their location is in Fry's headquarters and their promised permanent location (that Fry was building) is far from finished.

I read somewhere recently that the melting of ice in Greenland is exposing vast quantities of sand. I am not sure if this will make a difference as transporting the sand would then be a problem.

Are there still typists?

Yes. In some countries of South America we have typists for transcribing litigations in the legal system. Of course we also have cameras and voice recorders, but transcriptions are done faster with typists.

Can we estimate how much energy would a server farm of quantum computers (capable of doing something useful) need?

Yes, but it would be kind of like Charles Babbage estimating how much coal would have to be burnt to power the Analytical Engine.

Well, if it's going to take 150 years to get to that point, maybe they should stop with the hype already.
