IIRC, Trader Joe's doesn't want to operate in Canada because of our more stringent liquor laws-- they wouldn't be able to sell alcohol here the way they do in the states, which would significantly affect their bottom line.
There are many states with stringent liquor laws that TJs operates in just fine. They tend to just not sell alcohol in those stores or in some locations have a separated liquor store.
Submitted under the title "EVE Online shatters its records with new largest war: The 49-U6U Slaughterhouse". I understand the reasoning behind the editor's title changing, but it always feels clickbait-y when you can't reason out what the article is about with the title (or the first few comments.)
"HCI people discover bugs by receiving a concerned email from their therapist. Systems people discover bugs by waking up and discovering that their first-born children are missing and “ETIMEDOUT ” has been written in blood on the wall."
and also
"I HAVE NO TOOLS BECAUSE I’VE DESTROYED MY TOOLS WITH MY TOOLS."
I'm interpreting it as a portmanteau of green and red, which, set on black, are the predominant choices of hackers and terminals on movies and TV shows.
I can't tell if you're trying to broaden the statement or disagreeing, but I find it more condescending when someone outside my minority is presuming to speak for it than when someone acknowledges the systematic discrimination that we face.
In all fairness, this is only an excerpt, so theoretically he could've asked followup questions in the full version from the magazine. On the other hand, the thoughtfulness of the questions excerpted do not bode well for the full version.
I don't think that "how not to design a website" is quite fair-- they just haven't overhauled the design for over five years, and design trends have completely changed in the meantime. At the time, the current design was innovative (with Khoi Vinh bringing the typographical grid to web prominence with it) and consequentially cleaner than every other news website. The clutter also skeuomorphically evokes the idea of a newspaper (though this isn't necessarily desirable and probably what you mean by "start from scratch.")
Although I'm excited for this new design, I think it's important to recognize the merits of the old one.
