Titor claimed that he was sent back to obtain an IBM 5100 because it could translate several types of computer code. According to IBM engineer Bob Dubke, Titor's statements regarding the IBM 5100's little-known ability to emulate and debug mainframe systems were correct.
Most top listings are saturated with fake reviews. If you want to understand the depth of the fake listing problem, look at the thousands of people trying to create new listings in high-competition markets. Search Amazon for:
Click any result, then scroll down to the "Sponsored Products" section for that item. Repeat this, really dig down into the "sponsored" lists. Notice the amount of copiers.
Now look at the reviews. For new sponsored products in these categories virtually all of the entries are from review-mill programs. There can be hundreds of fake reviews on a single listing. Many of the negative reviews you may see on these are fake as well, from competitors!
Review-mill programs work by having the reviewers buy the product through amazon (they are reimbursed or discounted). Then they do a write ups. Many are short and organic looking, the more easily spotted ones contain lots of text and multiple photos of the product.
Completely agree with this. I think there is an analytics blindspot underpinning it. We don't measure the amount of people inclined to just close the tab when they see this, or the negative sentiment it incurs. We might see a nominal rise in email addresses from bots and other braindead folks who fill in these forms, but the negative effect isn't measured.
I wonder if the time delay on these pop-ups is set to avoid being measured by the "bounce rate" or "0-10 second session duration" analytics tools.
This would be especially interesting to measure. While the 0-10 second bounce rate on any site will be somewhat high due to people just looking for something other than the page you give them (I see 50% bounces on a small business site with zero ads), and it's difficult to distinguish these from people who didn't like the ads or format, you could get a precise measurement of exactly how many people close the page within 3 seconds of the pop-up appearing.
Zubrin and someone devised a way to use magsails to decelerate starships without using onboard fuel. That's magic, as you're not subject to the rocket equation. (Really, it was a failed attempt to develop a Bussard ramjet, but they figured out you'd never overcome the "friction" with the interstellar medium. So they were like, let's go with the friction!)
Management will always want to hire the young ones simply because they are easier to control and have lower salaries.
It would be great if this starts to change as the swell of tech workers hired to work on internet and mobile products in the past 2 decades starts age into their 30's / 40's / 50's.
