Any number should be fine if we actually had proper standards. Why are graphics so special that we can't have x86 of graphics? I think all of this is a problem of this klepto capitalism. Also, you need 4 to have competition

If you haven't noticed, there are plenty of standards kicking around in graphics and there isn't a need for any more. AMD, Nvidia, and Intel do a pretty good job supporting all of them - you can write a DX12 (or opengl, or Vulkan) program and run it any any vendor's hardware.

What problem do you think having a standard ISA would solve? Nobody distributes native binaries for GPUs, only shaders (either compiled to intermediate representation or no). From my perspective, all that a standard ISA would cause is less implementation flexibility in the hardware since now the hardware has to deal with compatibility instead of letting the vendor-specific compiler included with the driver deal with it.

I get what you are saying, but if used everything I would like to use I'd spend maybe a quarter of my paycheck every month. On random subscription things. Everything is subscription based and feels like I have to pay separate subscriptions for every bus I take, you know

That just means subscriptions might usually be too expensive, not that the model has some intrinsic issues.

Budgeting is "being an adult 101"...

You cannot get "everything you would like", that's life.

In the ad-funded internet, you really can get everything you like; you can even block ads if you don't want the inconvenience. What this discussion is really about is whether and how long this will dry up the supply of good content or replace it with bad.

This is all in all a bad way of talking about things. Flat vs. traditional is in the title. I think this can't be taken seriously, and that you all should know better. No time to read this in full, but they start by comparing windows 8 and windows 7 - so the problem is not the functional redesign, no, the problem is that it's flat? What is this

How did you get to this? After using 3ds max I can't believe that they actually charge money for it, it's amazing. And the worst part is the interface.

I'm reading what you say again, like maybe I misread, but are you being serious?

This is typical, but especially in 3D. The interface you know is amazing. All others are "objectively terrible".

Excellent talk, and we need more of this. Look at downloading and image instead of installing something on a raspberry pi. Next thing I expect is needing docker to install a calculator.

sorry, 490 euros? what?

This is a bit strange. There are a lot of exceptional people who will not get anywhere because they are poor. So it's nice and all, but don't just say her exceptional wealth has nothing to do with anything.

I expect some incredibly stupid reason. Post-brexit UK tries to nuke somewhere in the EU, or the USA decides we need to get Jesus here faster, or actually anything on this spectrum of insanity.

Right now it seems like science fiction that anybody will try doing anything about the climate.

So, in reality we'll probably see a failing ecosystem and the strongest military killing the rest of us.

> I expect some incredibly stupid reason.

China needing to get rid of a couple million excess men is the thing that scares me most.

I could see China throwing a couple million men into a meat grinder with India. That could easily do enough damage to India to provoke a nuclear response.

> Post-brexit UK tries to nuke somewhere in the EU

What is stopping pre-brexit UK trying to nuke EU? The EU treaties?

A lack of anger. Anger comes with the brexit effects.

(Probably not. But for the sake of argument.)

The Trident weapons system is in need of renewal.

I think the smug tone is getting to you. Like most surefire recipes for knowing things in advance this makes no real sense. But hey, at least they can smile over their cups or whatever

I bought a used acer from 2012 and the only bad thing is battery life of around three hours. Can't imagine paying for a new laptop

i had very bad experiences 1st and 2nd hand with Acer, though. unprovoked crashes, WiFi not working without significant research and fiddling. multiple models.
