2022 was a sad year

The scale at which we've traveled has also advanced with our technology, and the technology has also advanced with it - and it's increase with a pace that matches the overall progress of technology.

Columbus took 5 weeks to travel across the Atlantic with zero actual idea how long it would take.

The longest journey at sea without stops has been roughly 3 years.

We have people out on the ISS for 6m - 1y at a time.

Who knows how long it'll take for us to get to that point, but if we can survive the great filter, it's not unreasonable to think it'll take less than 1000 years to get to Mars based on the current trajectory. Probably a lot less.

I have some grasp of travel having working in global scale geophysical exploration and mapping and having visited a majority of the 190+ countries as a result.

The journeys described by dukeyukey as part of the spread of humanity across the globe took place over many many generations in short stages.

The longer journeys you describe all occurred in or post the European age of Expoloration.

Columbus had an idea of how long it would take to reach the Dutch East Indies, it was based on an incorrect idea of the radius of the earth.

Reid Stowe's 1,152 days at sea "without resupply or stepping on land" wasn't quite a voyage to Mars - fresh water condensed and was collectable, fish swam by and could be eaten, his pregnant co-sailer got off the boat after 306 days .. and the journey was possible without propulsion, fuel, and a massive radiation sheild.

I'm not saying that Mars is impossible, I am stating that no comparable journey has been undertaken by man .. the journeys by Europeans across the globe were journeys from where humans lived to other places where humans also already lived across oceans that supported life.

re: who profits from this, got me thinking - even though $1m is a drop in the bucket of the market cap, could burning that amount of funds have any meaningful effect on the price? since the time of this transaction, prices have gone up 1.5% which is not huuuugely significant and causation != correlation

I think the hacked whale account makes most sense to me tho

Given the market cap of Bitcoin, it would not have a measurable effect simply to shrink the supply by $1M.

Does that also include the publicity?

If the media takes notice and talks about bitcoin, couldn’t that make more people buy and thus drive up the price?

I’m willing to admit that it is a bit 6 dimensional chess explanation.

Even assuming that this would increase the price by 5% (which did not happen and would be quite a stretch goal), the sender would have needed to trade in over 20 million USD just to break even. People have bet money on stupider ventures, sure, but the risk and required capital to even hope to make money make this explanation not likely in my eyes.

+1, it's gotten pretty easy to do bitcoin tracing these days IIRC. there's definitely cash out methods but for this large of a sum, seems like it'd be difficult?

hah humans are interesting! I'm the opposite. I love starting a codebase, I also make music and it's way easier for me to make 100 cool unique sketches live and improvised but not finish anything. it really takes all kinds

I would love to team up with someone like you. Having a person that can start a new code base and not be overwhelmed by the task is a godsend. I'm much more comfortable diving into an existing project and extending it or fixing bug than I am starting something new. Somehow it's just more natural for my brain.

My favorite musical partnerships have a balance of a starter and (me) a finisher. I really struggle with producing raw material, but am good at revising, reworking, and cutting out fluff and my best writing partners are great at spewing out ideas, most of which are cut. It together, we are able to make something we’re both excited about.

yes it does. the phrase OP used was likely a reference to this Apple issue, not that PM is literally doing this

oh that’s fantastic! keeping this in my back pocket

IDK, many people spend their whole lives glued to the TV or movies. it feels like it has only gotten worse. it also feels like people don't have hobbies these days. I think to convince people of what you're saying, we need to get people back into having more hobbies. or at least reading or something

The only solution I know is very labor intensive process (and kind of not covid friendly atm), Call up said friend and meet them in person for coffee / hikes / whatever you two like. Refuse invites to do "screen time" things...

worked in restaurants for years before moving to software engineering. despite being 'good' at coding, it screws me up a bit that I was a lot happier in many ways while working at a restaurant. i felt I had a lot more brain bandwidth for my personal activities outside of work, too

yeah that was amazing. it felt like a lot of people on there were also fans of Erowid, which I now realize probably had a lot of the same people submitting experiences
