lmao this is the most HN comment ever

running with a phone in your pocket is hell

This person gets it.

It was fine up till the 13 mini. Every iPhone after that is too big and heavy to fit in a running belt without jostling.

I run daily with a 13 mini easily. My shorts have a pocket in the liner that makes it trivial.

I don't fully understand people that carry their phone in hand when running.

Why did you downgrade from your 13 mini? It's supported until 2030.

I used to have my phone on a strap around my arm. Even that stopped working

I run with phone clenched in hand.

I bought a series 11 with the esim option for this very reason and it just - doesnt - work. The airpod connection drops randomly, spotify stops working, navigation randomly stops working, the apple health app doesnt respect my other workout app, etc.

I'm really unsatisfied with this device.

A lot of garmin watches let you download YT / Spotify or your own mp3s

Gotcha! Been a minute since I’ve looked it up.

Battery life on Garmin’s is genuinely terrible as soon as you have music running though. Less than the apple watch.

The plot thickens. Frankly even if it did get music right it would be tough to replace streaming my own Plex music library directly on my Apple watch. 100% worth paying for cellular.

The interface is terrible I've never actually remember to use spotify like this on my garmins and I've worn like 4 over the last decade. Maybe if you use it for a week straight it'll be muscle memory, but I only accidentally play music on it.

It can download and sync playlists and you connect bt headphones to it.

I'll keep buying garmins but I do hate the ux.

What's interesting about this study in Swedish women is that if you look at the results section the high sun exposure group has the highest disposable income and most years of education. Low exposure has the lowest disposable income and least years of education. Probably because for Swedish women high sun exposure means travel which is expensive.

It's hard to say if the study measures sun exposure or the ability to stay healthy with a higher income & better education.

This is the dirty secret about any health study that can be impacted by socioeconomic status: if it can be impacted, it is. More money, fewer problems. 99% of the time.

Disposable income and education are adjusted for.

But does it control for family/relative income? One could be poor but could travel and maintain a safety net from their family.

Too many variables to control for imo to abductively say the sun helped. Once you start controlling for enough variables to start teasing out causation, degrees of freedom and the power of the tests become precarious.

Not to mention issues with data dragging/p-hacking: we don’t know if they just tested a bunch of random things and are only reporting the interesting finding.

But regardless, even if we give them the benefit of the doubt regarding p-hacking, this paper has not reached a sufficient level of abduction to convince me of anything. Even if there is a correlation between sunlight and health, this correlation doesn’t deduce the mechanism, meaning I can’t prescribe myself any solution. Is it because going outside and enjoying yourself causes less stress? Then video games would be just as good. Maybe it’s the vitamin D? I could then just supplement. Maybe people who go out more are more connected to family? I could spend time with them inside. One could argue the mechanism is not important, but that ignores that sun damage dramatically increases skin aging and skin cancer risk, and also ignores that I could expose myself to the sun and unintentionally avoid the real mechanism behind the desired effect.

More likely, there's a optimal amount of sun that you should get to live the longest and Sweden provides less sun than that.

This is especially likely since, as another commenter pointed out, they corrected for wealth factors already!

Stockholm is at 60N, the university that did this study, Lund, is at 55N. If you live further south than that, you might be getting optimal, or even more than optimal, amounts of sun even without sunbathing.

They control for that. Sun exposure correlates with decreased mortality (with a dose dependent relationship) for people at the same income level. One of the figures plots it for “moderate income.”

we've played this game before

In the past, the game was as played with the additional benefit of foreign bondholders and currency reserves slowing the overall velocity of money. The rest of the world has heen quietly blunting the inflationary effects of printing USD.

Most Americans - this administration included - don't know how good they have had it, and are throwing it all away due to avarice.

I tried swapping running with cycling for a few months but honestly as somebody who spends a good portion of my time on my ass, often with suboptimal posture in front of a screen I hate the idea of exercising still sitting on my ass with bad posture.

The most important thing imo is to find a form of cardio you enjoy. It's not worth stressing over the differences between forms of cardio just find something you like and make it a part of your lifestyle.

Reagarding knee injuries, sure intense running with bad form is more likely to get you an overuse injury but those heal quickly, long term studies don't show increased knee/hip risk for runners.

Strength exercises are also very important for runners. Getting all the muscles arounf your hips, knees and ankles stronger significantly reduces the chance and severity of injuries and has a ton of other benefits.

If you are sitting on your ass (as in the normal definition of buttocks) when cycling, you are doing it wrong or you are riding a recumbent.

Typically you sit on the part in front of your hip, which also has its downsides as it is quite a delicate area where pressions on the wrong area could lead to issues.

MTB is the solution here. You can't really sit down when it gets a bit rough.

Why do people get so defensive about obviously flawed processes? This reply reads like a 4chan comment written by a frustrated teenager

Quite the contrary, you don't get to claim that the entire process is flawed while failing to demonstrate even the most basic understanding of it.

see you next year

yes but then you become a "suspicious user" and you have to fill 100 CPATCHAs every day

at this point browser fingerprinting is a feature, not a bug

I second this. I tried to use Tor browser for a day in place of my regular browser. Many websites wouldn't open and the ones that dud asked me to fill in thousand captchas.

Even the unmodified Firefox browser with a few of the privacy settings turned on break a lot of sites.

To be frank, in my book, relative to inadvertently being fingerprinted and tracked wherever I go, I consider being consistently faced with “let’s confirm you’re not a robot” popups and pages to be a minor inconvenience.

Consider that all those CAPTCHAs are fingerprinting your browser anyway, and probably also your biometrics (through your inputs while solving each CAPTCHA).

RETH* is one of the open source implementations of the Ethereum protocol. Around 2% of Ethereum nodes run it today.

Historically, there have been hundreds of blockchians that were basically slightly modified forks of Ethereum clients, operated by a small group of validators that sacrifice decetralization in order to achieve higher throughput. This seems to be a slightly higher effort verson of that.

Steam used to accept BTC payments in 2016 but they didn't want to deal with the probabilistic finality of bitcoin so they quickly removed the btc option. previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30478262

In 2016 this wasn't a solved problem but today it is

How is it fixed today? I'm not in the bitcoin game but doesn't the transaction have to be mined and that takes at least 10 minutes?

The landscape of third party companies who offer transaction insurance has increased. With bitcoin you have the lightning network.

The lightning network is a "solution" to Bitcoin in the same way that buying a new car fixes the old one.
