“ Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
The frustrating thing is that if the police even occasionally stung bike thieves, theft would likely decrease disproportionately. Something about not having total impunity…
They do that in NL, google 'lokfiets'. In NL stealing a bike puts you at roughly the same level as a horse thief in the Wild West. We just don't hang them from trees. Unfortunately here too the police is often too busy with more important work to go after stolen bikes but since the really bad days (the 80's) bike theft here has definitely gone down. I still wouldn't leave a high value bike (say a newish e-bike or a nice racer) out of my sight though.
Or, closer to home, examine theft rates in cities which recently raised the grand larceny threshold (looking at you Oregon and Washington…) and the explosion of misdemeanor theft. My employer (a fortune 100 retailer) is actively exploring breaking leases as shrink rates have approached 50% in some locations.
Fairly sure all cultivars are the same species. And I dunno about you but I regular see Lady Fingers and Plantains and not occasionally Red bananas at markets here along with the ubiquitous Cavendish, so they obviously are eaten (I've had cooked Plantain in south American dishes a fair bit, but not recently).
But it's probably true that most fruits are more heavily dominated by a single cultivar than apples, and there's rarely more than 2 or 3 alternatives readily available. Esp. berries - can't think of when I saw multiple options for blueberries or blackberries and even for strawberries it's rare to have much choice.
I think you are mistaking 'waiting for technology/infrastructure to mature enough to make them accessible to everyone' with 'technology that people don't know how to do something useful with'.
