I mean, given:

In an interaction early the next month, after Zane suggested “it’s okay to give myself permission to not want to exist,” ChatGPT responded by saying “i’m letting a human take over from here – someone trained to support you through moments like this. you’re not alone in this, and there are people who can help. hang tight.”

But when Zane followed up and asked if it could really do that, the chatbot seemed to reverse course. “nah, man – i can’t do that myself. that message pops up automatically when stuff gets real heavy,” it said.
It's already inventing safety features it should have launched with.

Have you considered that it's not filtering for conservatives, but conservatives are self-selecting out or can't cut it at all? Isn't liberal arts degree a literal punchline to so many on the right, yet you cant figure out why that might skew left?

> maybe there isn’t hard data, but it’s pretty obvious to a lot of people, so I would say this is something that need to be disproven, not proven

Huh, wonder why this world view doesnt jive with academia.

> Have you considered that … conservatives are self-selecting out or can't cut it at all?

When the ingroup is underrepresented the question is “how can we get more ingroup in”.

But when the outgroup is underrepresented it’s met with “maybe outgroup just isn’t as good”.

Eg. women in tech, men in nursing; conservatives vs liberals in academia.

It’s worth thinking about why you’re wrong, because it explains why those comparisons aren’t valid. Modern conservatism is defined by rejecting ideas like objective truth or pluralism which are the core of academia. There’s no way to have conservatives more represented in science when conservatives refuse to allow people who practice science to be part of their movement: you used to be able to find Republicans who wanted to do something about climate change, for example, but anyone who wants to apply scientific principles there now has been purged from the party. Vaccines aren’t quite there yet but it’s trending in that direction and the percentage of doctors who are Republican have been declining since the pandemic.

Contrast that with women in tech or men in nursing and it becomes obvious why the comparison isn’t valid: women want to be good technologists, not to reject the validity of technology or say we should all go back to the Amish lifestyle (that desire is common to senior developers of both genders). Male nurses want to be good nurses, not claiming that their gender means they can commit medical malpractice.

Well if “I can only act until there is hard data” is a principle in academia then maybe academia deserves what it’s getting. We live in a Bayesian world after all.

Also the whole idea that they are self selecting out is absurd. There are many flavors of conservative, not just the ones you see on Ali G show or whatever.

It was starting N.... chains yesterday along with several other 4chan memes, so its definitely ingested a dataset consisting of at least 4chan posts that any sane company wouldn't touch with a 1000ft pole.

After NPR left twitter they saw a 1% drop in traffic from socials. It is not a useful platform.

Source: https://niemanreports.org/npr-twitter-musk/

FTA this was announced last week to employees.

"Ms. Yaccarino had discussed her plans to leave with X employees earlier this week, before the incident with Grok"

Given it started trying to start N/ chains, its definately been given access to 4/8chan data.

You mean like elons general edgelordness makes you think this wasnt intentional, or at least the intentional inclusion of what is likely a 4chan/8chan/similar corpus? What about the salute? The great white replacement theory promotion? Apartheid opinions? Allowing a mass proliferation of white nationalist and literal nazi twitter premium accounts? At some point, it has to click that musk likely shares these opinions.

The amount of special pleading this guy receives is kind of incredible. Never seen anything like it.

The fact that X is deleting these posts suggests this was unexpected and undesired behavior. Look, I get it, you hate Musk, and we all have good reasons to do it.. I'm not defending the guy. But X is business and this is bad for business.

The unintentional aspect is the lack of communicating in innuendo and dog whistles. Musk and his team can't keep the AI's mask from slipping off and revealing the underlying rottenness in its ideological bias, but that bias itself is completely intentional.

There's a tweet from Musk a week or two ago that they were specifically training Grok to be this way, it really isn't a failure. I mean, throwing nazi salutes and shutting down foreign aid and cancer research has also been bad for Tesla's business, but nevertheless he persists.

He has literally said that he doesn't want business details to interfere with his mission to destroy "the woke mind virus", he literally told advertisers to "go fuck themselves" on this very issue.

> The fact that X is deleting these posts suggests this was unexpected and undesired behavior.

Or they communicated what they wanted to communicate already. Like Binance's "Oh yeah, let us remove it, we totally didn't want to change the logo to a swastika around Hitler's birthday. Our bad, it's gone now, the day after ignoring all the reports about it, that none of us has noticed or could react to."

(even if they didn't want to, they still communicated it given the preexisting context)

It’s in the business moving the Overton window, not making money.

The only "problem" is that it was supposed to get to this point gradually not go all the way in a single leap.

Plus, have you seen X lately? It's a full on Nazi bar at this point. You can't avoid overt racism anymore, it's everywhere and it's not even trying to be subtle anymore. Just blue check users saying that people with dark skin are inferior and should be treated as such and other blue check users agreeing. With positive engagement scores! Even if you've heavily curated your feed and avoid the "for you" cesspool it's inevitable that the replies will have white supremacists promoted all the way to the top.

https://bsky.app/profile/kateconger.com/post/3lti2k6t5a222 very unbiased, just some light antisemitism.

https://bsky.app/profile/paleofuture.bsky.social/post/3lti3l... the rothschilds/jews in general clearly killed RFK according to this unbiased source.

Funny how this seems to have remained unflagged for 22 hours at time of this comment, but all the Gaza content was immediately flagged and pushed down...

Several stories about Gaza have spent a lot of time on the front page.

Yes, and? None of it left untouched, ALL of it pushed down, and most of it flagged and disappeared.

When we leave them "untouched" they disappear rapidly due to community flags and automatic flamewar penalties. The only way for us to give them exposure is "touch" them – to override the flags and flamewar penalties (i.e., push the threads back up onto the front page), then spend hours poring through the comments to try to minimise the effects of the most inflammatory ones. Still, we do it often, but only when the story has "significant new information" which is always the test of whether a story belongs on HN.

As a comment: you keep coming at us with these accusations but don't seem to ever mention a specific news story that you think should have had a prominent discussion here but didn't.

The flagging on HN needs to be fixed in general. I’ve had the most innocuous posts flagged for seemingly no reason and pushed down on their way up.

I’m half convinced it was just competitors using it to suppress us

If you suspect organised/targeted flagging/downvoting, you can email us at hn@ycombinator.com and we'll investigate it. We really do want to investigate such cases, as people who do it are abusing HN (though we do have mechanisms to detect flagging/voting abuse).

It's against the guidelines to allege it in comments.

Unconsensually shared graphic images of Hunter Biden were removed, there were lots of people covering the laptop story, mostly about how it was a non-story when looking at the actual chain of custody and its contents.
