The reason more performance/watt is in demand because a datacenter can't suddenly draw twice as much power.

Or because I don’t want my homelab to spike my electricity bill and give me a loud hot closet.

I mean for the price I can get used thinkpads (and replace the battery if needed) and not have to deal with the crappy parts - I only have to deal with older parts.

Now I have a wifi radio running in homeassistant. Running my own (music only) radios with azuracast. Loud enough for high quality 30+ year old 10kg 100/140 Watt speakers. Next step is making a remote for it, cheap ikea one with two buttons or a tap dial with more.

A 5 pack of arctic pwm fans was 25€. I was considering noctua but the G2 fans were always delayed. But I doubt I would have paid 150-200€ for 5 fans.

They do have the most insane pricing. I could see myself buying some in the 15€ range but not 35€.


We have vendor locked-in hardware as well (blowing fuses on threadripper/epyc to disable running on a different mainboard)
