When I cared, I found out that a lot of OBD-II dongles shipped with the same MAC, which gave you access to everything on a bunch of websites.

how did "same MAC" lead to "access to everything"?

Was the website's security based on MAC, which presumably is supplied by the client? If so, I guess.. typical IoT.


buy any dongle that sells for under $100 on amazon. they all have the same mac, and come with 'bespoke' apps to let you do things to your car. those apps are all thin wrappers on code widely shared; they use the MAC of the dongle as the keystone for ID.

Short story: buy one cheap dongle on Amazon, dump the MAC (00:11:22:AA:BB:CC IIRC; it's been 15 years since I cared) and you have auth to all of the apps everywhere.

Reminder: the Bluetooth logo comes, mostly, from self-certification.

I bought 3 from 3 different vendors and they all have totally different Mac addresses.

Internally they're all Bluetooth to serial chips, and another pic16xxxx chip which does serial to canbus.

I guess the Bluetooth serial chips probably have programmable Mac addresses, but equally they normally ship with a globally default one unless you flash a different one onto it.


Why do the apps need auth?


How does this even work? A website doesn't know your MAC, that is only known in your local network.


Jim Grey and I knew all the same people at WMHD yet somehow never ran into each other. I was an annoying high school student. Ron Dippold (he ran usenet votes for a long time) was there, among others.

When I was digging through old VHS tapes, I digitized a couple TV spots and put them on youtube; passing them along to Jim.

that adds a time dimenstion- not a spacial one. I'm no expert- but I'd expect a quadrf to not even need a time dimension for that case (rf transmitters are very rarely buried among noise in a spacial dimension.). my terms might be wrong, but I doubt the concepts are.

Thank you for the expanded explanation. But it doesn't really explain how we should help and what you hope to achieve with our help. A bit more targeted information would be appreciated. You seem to be doing important work, but it's difficult to understand what you want from us.


Keep in mind that while I am employed by the Linux Foundation, I know nothing of the internals of this project; I will speak, instead, of what the projects I support do.

I have found (c) to be high noise, low signal. We're winding down our HackerOne program.

D: we do this in a couple ways. For PQCA, for instance, we use credits from AWS to get access to hardware to run proofs and CI on. PQCA also has a paid mentorship program.

For OWF, we do the same with AWS credits, as well as provide hosting for projects to run services on for testing.

For LFDT, we offer paid mentorships, have paid for Trail of Bits to do reviews, and run events. We had a maintainer summit in New York in January so our maintainers could meet for two days face-to-face. We fund large GitHub CI runners for projects as well.

I know it doesn't answer everything, but our team is only a few people and we really do work hard to help developers. What I'll call the devrel team for OWF/PQCA/LFDT is three FTE, one contractor, and our manager.
