> At about 9 p.m., a bus driver parked at the downtown MacNab Bus Terminal and left for a short break, Hamilton police said in a news release Wednesday.

This is kind of common. It is too easy to leave the keys for a short moment. There are many incidents like this, some with very tragic consequences.

The solution is to change how this vehicles verify who is at the wheel away from keys to something safer. People will keep forgetting the keys inside, better solutions already exist than a physical key.

> Fighting the New York Times' invasion of user privacy

OpenAI is lying about why they are doing this. They want the public to attack the New York Times because OpenAI probably broke the law in so many ways...

If they cared about privacy they would no training their models on that same private data. But here we are.

We need very strong regulations to rule in all these tech companies and make them work for their users instead of working against them and lying about it.

Both of you are right.

Without any regulations companies will create software that costs more to the users, but saves pennies to the company.

So, we have regressed in efficency.

They are not mutually exclusive but one follows from the other.

Your framing is correct

It’s company vs user not regression vs efficiency

> there cannot exist an easy way for a typical non-technical user to install “unverified apps” (whatever that means), because the governments of countries where such scams are widespread will hold Google responsible.

But it is perfectly fine to sell crypto and other complex financial assets to kids and other people that do not know they are from apps in the Play store.

If "safety" takes control from you then it is implemented. If real safety puts profits in danger then it is fight against. Quite a dystopia.

> Not going to be running this at home any time soon

Which public administration are you HotGarbage?

Why wouldn't I want to self-host my own Google/Microsoft alternative?

Is this just rage-bait?

Don't think that European politicians are not corrupt. Who is going to pay a politician to use open source or local services from a small company? Who is paying politicians to use Microsoft?

When a decision makes no economic, legal, nor security sense just follow the money.

I can never find it again but there was a topic on HN a few months ago about exactly this - some government entity switched away from Microsoft, and then got a bunch of bribes and switched back. And there was discussion about how this is very normal and everyone sees this happening in their organisation too.

> When mutual funds share revenue with plan administrators, employees get higher costs and lower performance

Capitalism is optimizing money extraction. Why make better products or give better service at better cost when it is possible to just lie to the public and steal their money?

While the USSR created state monopolies the USA broke theirs creating competition and wealth for everybody. In the current political climate, USA politicians profit economically from all kind of monopolies and cartels following the steps of the failed USSR.

Market capitalism cannot exist without goverment regulations. But voters have been misled to think that any regulation is communism and radicalized to accept the new billionaires as saviors instead of the problem.

> The move comes as air traffic controllers have missed their paychecks due to the government shutdown. Air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration screeners are among the essential government employees who are required to work during the shutdown.

Slavery never went away, it just shifted.

But at least the Republican goverment is doing something positive to curve climate change. If they shut down enough of the economy and people cannot afford gas anymore that will produce less CO2. Win?

The USA needs a national ID, it will help to avoid fraud, to get socialized health care, etc.

To collect data just for police enforcement is horrifying and it will increase the control that goverment has in private affairs without proving anything of value to society.

The USA claims freedom to avoid taking care of their own, but it claims security to spy and control its own citizens.
