John Gustafson is on the board of Rex Computing, a small semi startup. They claim to have taped out last year, but I don't know if the chip has been validated or if it had posits in silicon, but I know that is one of their longer term goals.
I find Gustafson's UNUMS 2.0 more compelling than the first version.

Type 2 unums are pretty much entirely deprecated by type 3 unums (now given the name 'posits' as referred to in the OP's linked paper)... they are basically superior in every way, and I recommend watching John's February 2nd talk at Stanford.
I bought my 30" ACD's in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Two have died. My last one is starting to wig out. The new 5k LG monitor is brighter and sharper, but it's only about 3/4 the physical screen space. Funny how some things go backwards and other things go forwards.
My 3 monitors have been used for 4 generations of Macs, though. Definitely agree that monitors live longer than the underlying computer.
That's a context-dependent question. If you want to do systems-level stuff that's safe, concurrent, and fast, then learn Rust! I'm having lots of fun with Rust. :-)
If you don't want some of those attributes, then Rust probably isn't the best answer for you.

That headline was prevalent back then. Oracle responded to the threat by eating the ecosystem around them. Had they not done that, their financial picture would be drastically worse today. It's entirely plausible that Oracle would have unraveled as a major enterprise player if they hadn't acquired so much of the industry. Ellison knew what was happening, his acquisition moves were meant to guarantee Oracle's long-term survival. It was: become a monster, or eventually be eaten by one.
Judging by the graph there was a serious inflection point in 2008. Which seems about right from what I remember. So it probably should have been a headline long before now.
The 2008 inflection would have come from the financial crisis. Lots of large firms got hit by that, and a few went under. Since the plot is of _new_ licenses, it suggests that companies weighing the benefits of Oracle vs. one of the alternatives (Postgresql, NoSQL), went with cheaper.
