What censorship are you referring to? Streaming services as far as I know can show anything that isn't illegal. Is that not the case?

Streaming services can show anything...sometimes with supply side cartel repercussions that completely undermine the company...such as the case with Parler.

Content providers are censored by streaming providers for political reasons. Hate speech laws in England & Europe criminalizes (jail time) people for saying the wrong things about protected political groups.

Banks & the Canadian government have criminalized people donating to the Trucker protest. The protest leaders are still held in detention. Also journalists have doxxed the people who donate.

January 6th protesters are help in prison & finances ruined by having to fight a federal case for attending a protest. And if you want to call it an insurrection to excuse the authoritarian response China does the same against people who protests there.

I know that it's different but at least from my perspective my passion has always been code and building things. What I really want to do is work on my own projects but I need to make money too. My job isn't particularly interesting or engaging but I am thankful that I get to write code everyday for a living and at least do things that somewhat contribute to my projects outside of work.

I don't know I just feel like the categorization is a bit unfair that doing something you love in a commercial setting will strip you of your creativity. I think to some extent work as whole through pure exhaustion does that but that's why I'm glad that I get the measly reward of doing something adjacent to what I enjoy. I'm sure I'd feel differently if tech salaries were lower but if they were identical would you really prefer writing enterprise software all day over doing commercial art?

If you and I sat next to each other. You with an online game in front of you and me with a few handles of vodka and we both started playing and drinking without stopping I would likely be dead before you reached Chinas mandated time limit. I thought it was obvious that the risks between these two things are very different.

You could use the same analogy for gambling, but I wouldn’t conclude the risk profile for gambling is safe.

It’s why it’s banned in most countries for people under the age of 18

Well I'm very interested to see how this plays out. Knowing what I know about kids it seems like China is making the mistake helicopter parents. Some of the already over achieving kids might respond well to this but frankly as ridiculous as it sounds this is how you end up building generations who resent their government.

Sorry but where is the harm reduction for everyone else's race? Doesn't seem like it's a priority since the people in powerful also enjoy those vices. It's a bit coincidental that the races with less power also have the vices that they need to be protected by. My family is Mexican and they love tequila. I can guarantee you that if it was banned they'd all drink less alcohol and would be much less of a burden on our healthcare system. Somehow I'm yet to see a suggested ban of flavored Smirnoffs because it's turning our white college students into alcoholics.

I'm not going to argue for or against the ban, but tobacco companies specifically targeted african-americans to use them and the civil rights movement to defend industry policy.

Mexicans like tequila because it's made from agave which is easy to grow in the desert. Mexicans have loved tequila since before europeans even landed in mexico.

Hey I'm from Vegas as well and I have a friend getting his MFA working on a story on the Downtown Project and it seems like he's coming to a lot of the conclusions you've come to. If it's possible I'd love to get you in touch with him to talk about your experience a bit.

I think in most cases it's probably not hate but a deep, deep love.

JavaScript, LISP under C disguise. No wonder it's "popular" on HN.

Assorted musing : Rust, OCaml under C disguise.

I think in the case of Reddit though that vocal minority could account for some non negligible amount of the content the site relies on. The site needs its power users or it has nothing to deliver to the casual user.

I am spending more time on Reddit these days, not less. I'm spending less time on HN.

I own quite a few subreddits. Maybe I'm a future power user.

The old guard typically dies before the new generation can thrive. Until they leave they tend to actively gatekeep keep potential competitors out.

I am fine with hearing "Maybe you will finally get to build your own garden, at last, Doreen." God knows the past decade has been pure shit for my online social life, which stands in stark contrast to when I routinely had real friends online, met them in person, got meaningful help with my health issues, with raising and educating my kids, etc etc.

I guess it's just a matter of decency. You certainly don't need to abide by that but don't be surprised when others don't agree with or want to be around you.

Did you read the article by chance? The author wasn't "cancelled" on account of the misreporting. That was just what put a spotlight on him leading to cancelling him for unrelated actions.
