I'm happy to see this. It seems to benefit all consumers, even those who do not use AI.
True, but it was probably to OpenAI's best interest. It would be easy for competing models to partner with stores and offer their competing protocol, and now models would have to make deals and if a user wanted to be able to use it to buy from websiteX you might need to go use the competitor's LLM, etc. Not sure that would have been a smart move for them.
